Not to mince words, the toll of highway accidents and deaths in this country is down-right appalling, and calls for the strictest of law enforcement efforts by public officials. One of the most distressing facets of this unfortunate situation is the resistance on the part of many citizens to any concerted attempts to remedy matters. It is a known fact that whenever law enforcement officials — particularly local police — put on a drive to end traffic violations, they are faced with the vexing problem of public indignation. A lot of people complain loudly and bitterly that traffic officers are acting with undue harshness, and there are dark mutterings about “Gestapo methods” and “servants of the people.” The plain truth of the matter is that the average citizen is very loath to look upon himself as a law-breaker, and the average policeman is not apt to regard him in that light either. The police would be less than human if they failed to respond to the pressure of public opinion — however misguided — and relax a bit in their vigilance over traffic violations. But any relaxation, any letting down of the bars, is dangerous. Those of us who are truly interested in highway safety and the preservation of life and limb can easily out-pressure complaints abut the severity of traffic law enforcement, simply by writing to public officials to let them know that we are behind them 100% in any efforts to crack down on traffic violators. Surely we must outnumber the dissenters ? Buy U.S. Savings Bonds 9
