TOTAL 267 CLEVELANDERS CELEBRATE MERGER Spring is here — with its snow, sunshine, lots of mud — and colds! Spring training pictures of baseball players down South make one feel as though the weather is really on the warm side — even if it is in a blizzard sort of way. One can hear the chant of the golfers of Branch 27: Have you used your golf clubs yet? “Did you try putting around the house?” Yes, it won’t be long now. Representation from Toledo for our National Bowling Tournament will be another good one with one thing in mind: actual pins. A note to my good friend, Joseph S. Taylor, president of the Buffalo branch: Please keep plenty of that all-purpose food on hand, for our bowlers from Toledo burn up a lot of energy, and nothing comes in handier than a glass of milk after bowling. Mr. and Mrs. John Mokri recently celebrated another wedding anniversary with a small family gathering. Also celebrating their wedding anniversary are Mr. and Mrs. Charles Szabó of Delta. They were the guests of Mrs. Michael Vissi. Attending their celebration were Mr. and Mrs. William Vishi and Mrs. Szabó from Swanton, Charles’ mother. We were surprised to hear that Bill Curry’s (our ace left-handed bowler) wife Dee underwent surgery recently at St. Charles Hospital. At this writing, she is coming along fine. If Bill’s cooking is like his bowlling was at the Central States, then I know that the children will welcome. Dee home with open arms. A speedy recovery to you. Dee. Mrs. Stephen Joo is recuperating at home after a week’s stay at St. Vincent’s Hospital. She underwent minor surgery. Our auditor’s son, Joseph Hornyak, is at the Naval Hospital in Detroit, Michigan. Joseph. Sr. is one of Branch 27’s auditors. Good news from Rossford and the Verboskys’ is that father Stephen is feeling fine and gaining weight after siege of illness during the winter months. Some good wishing weather might cure Mr. Verbosky’s ailments. Brother Frank and his wife Elvira made a speedy trip home from St. Louis last week. Mrs. Francis Quiroz, E1-* vira’s mother, underwent emergency surgery at the Toledo Hospital. She is recovering very nicely and we know that “Bea” was good medicine for her mother. Toledoans and members of Branch 27 are mighty proud to have two of the hottest bowlers, in Toledo and vicinity as our members. Recently, Dick Sendi rattled the pins for a 727 total. The same evening, at another bowling alley, Bok Nickel bowled 258, 267 and 258 for a 783 total! These two will make the trip to Buffalo. If they keep on at their present pace, all I can say is, LOOK OUT ACTUAL PINS! Incidentally, Dick and Bob are going to be doubles partners. (Joe Taylor — any bets on actual pins???) Good news to all bowlers in and near Toledo. Our Ace — Bob Nickel — who is doing so much for all bowlers — is going into the bowling business. Bob’s business will be under the name of “C.N.R.”; telephone LAwndale 7286; they will be located at 4118 Upton Avenue. They have the latest devices to drill and. measure bowling balls, which will help you to better your score. Bob will carry Brunswick balls, bags, shoe bags, also Colonial bowling ball bags. Another thing — while you’re waiting for your ball to be drilled — you can have a cup of hot coffee at no added charge. Important notice to all Toledo howlers competing in Buffalo: For the highest pin total over average — for nine games — Bob will give one man and one woman contestant each a bowling bag. This should give all the Toledo bowlers an added incentive to bowl better. You bowlers who want to go to Buffalo and are not satisfied with your present bowling, see Bob. Bob is not only an expert in the bowling field but also teaches bowling. It’s nice to see Verdis Stephens lead in the All-Events in the City Women’s Bowling Tournament with a 1679 total. Doris Walters and her partner Marty Smiley, are second in doubles with a 1213 total. ■ Nice shooting, girls, and keep it up. While we’re up here battling the stormy weather, it’s nice to know that Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Kovács enjoyed their vacation down South. Also, having a grand month’s vacation in Florida is Miss Anna Hrozak of St. Stephen’s Rectory. Happy Easter, everyone. Saturday evening, February 11, j 1956, was an occasion of great joy for the members of Rákóczi Branch 62, Cleveland, Ohio, and their guests as they celebrated the merger of the two large Hungarian American Fraternals, Verhovay and Rákóczi. The bright affair took place at the West Side Kálvin hall at West 32d Street, Cleveland. It was a highly sucessful event organized by the enthusiastic leadership of Rákóczi Branch 62 and to i which the East and West Sides of the former Verhovay and Rákóczi • members were invited, now coming as the united William Penn membership of that Hungarian-populated city. More than three hundreds guests participated at the “get acquainted” affair which included a delicious Magyar pork supper, Hungarian music and speeches by interesting' speakers. An excellent program of entertainment, prepared by Denis Szász, secretary, and Gabriel Kiss, president, enhanced the festivities. At the conclusion of the supper, Mr. Szász greeted the assembled members and guests and introduced Cleveland’s well-known Louis Bodnar, who assumed the toastmaster’s role. Appropriately, the National Anthem was sung first. Then branch president Gabriel Kiss greeted the assemblage. Mr. Kiss referred to the poem by Zoltán Csakvary, appearing in the second issue of the Hungarian William Penn, in which poem the Rákóczi- Verhovay merger is likened to the confluence of the Alleghany and Monongahela rivers in Pittsburgh to form the Ohio river. Next, two youthful members, Elsie and Robert Novak, talentedly played violin and piano solos. Main speaker was National Secretary Albert J. Stelkovics who gave lucid information on the facts con - cerning the forty year long endeavor to effect the merger, a triumphant union which saw fruition in 1955. The National Secretary then predicted an auspicious future for the new William Penn Fraternal Association. Director Frank Magyary of Akron, Ohio followed to speak on the fraternal life of our society. An interlude of entertainment in which Frank Szappanos, Cleveland radio director and vocalist, sang popular Magyar songs, was well received by the audience. Another member of the Board of Directors, Dr. Andrew Kovács, spoke and was highly applauded for his words. Toastmaster Bodnar followed to introduce these branch officers and representatives: * From Rákóczi Branch 140: Andrew Rigo, and his family; Verhovay Branch 45: Paul Magyary, Co- Ionian Bertalan, Joseph Drotos; Verhovay Branch 14: James Kovach, Louis F. Kostley: Rákóczi Brandi 43: Blase Kovács, president, who extended greetings. Introduced also were Louis Tarczai, editor of the Hungarian publication, “Az Újság,” and Julia Kémény. The program was closed by branch president Gabriel Kiss. The Cleveland Rakoczi-Verhovay “get-acquainted” meeting and social is another indication that the branches and members throughout the nation are happy former Rákóczi and Verhovay members unified in the new society. These affairs are “catching on” to manifest ths enthusiastic membership approval of the merger. It is a salubrious sign of the future of the William Penn Fraternal Association.
