He held the distinction of being the only Verhovay officer who in the last century held his position consecutively for eight years ~ " l". 1 POWER C :ity NEWS SPRINGDALE, PA. AND VICINITY Edward! A. Mattie toy/ Branch 296 We like the month of March for it is the beginning- of spring. Many notable people were born in this month. The end of March terminates lent this year. Hearsay has it that a new sign will be put up on the Cleveland William Penn Building. We have learned that about five of our teams will go to the Buffalo Bowling Tournament. A committee was appointed to work out ways and means for all the members who may want to bowl. Joseph Semetko, Joseph M. Toth and Nick Yuhasz, Sr. were elected to the bowling committee. The new manager of Branch 14 is Louis F. Kostley who was elected at the February meeting. Fiank R. Pokorny, Jr., a son of a member of ours, is a candidate for state representative. Lest we forget, Joseph J. Horvath is also a candidate as state representative, this time for reelection. May 8, not many weeks away, is the date of elections. A dinner was held for council president Jack P. Russell. Toastmasters were Judge Joseph Steams and Frank Szabó. Oscar Federau, our French-Hungarian member, was elected delegate to the Cleveland Federation of Labor by his Engravers Union. Dr. Andrew Kovács, Director, attends most of the Branch 14 meetings. He really circulates. Member Anthony J. Celebrezze, Mayor of Cleveland, received the Order of Merit of the Republic of Italy at a dinner in his honor at Hotel Carter, Cleveland, on February 12th, which affair was attended by a thou-* sand guests. We hear that the new cars bought by Burt and Marge Luscik and Tony and Ann Pinter are costing a heap of money to put into A-l shape. Yes? April 21st will be the second card party sponsored by the Sports Club at 8637 Buckeye Rd. Tickets will be 50 cents. There will be refreshments and favors. Election of Officers for 1956 — Sports Club: Ted Beres, president; Joseph Semetko, vice president; Betty Knapp, secretary; Ann Pinter, treasurer; Mary Bodnar, Steve Piscalko and Dorothy Kastan, auditors; Oscar Federau and George Bubonic, sergeants at arms; Frank Oravis, storekeeper. The new oficers were sworn in by state representative Joseph J. Horvath. James Kovach, president of Branch 14, requested that the Sports Club change its name to “William Penn Sports Club”. This request will be taken under consideration after we have depleted our stationery, and affairs that were contracted under the old name have terminated. Coloman1 Fuzzy, house manager, gave several good suggestions for the benefit of our card party. There are an appreciable number of Hungarians who are backing Judge John E. Sweeney for Governor of the State of Ohio. He is a former Secretary of the State of Ohio and twice won easily. He is a gentleman, knows the law, social, and, in our opinion, would be an excellent choice for Governor on the Democratic ticket. We recommend him to our William Penn members who .will vote in the Ohio primaries. The Bi-anch 14 card party on March 4th was well attended. Many former Verhovay dignitaries, now William Penn, were present. Among them were Coloman Kolozsvary, former director, Dr. Andrew Kovács, Director, Julius Cincar, business man, Joseph Szalay, former vice president Joseph Hegedűs, Mrs. Hegedűs, Steve Vache, Frank Oravis, Jacob Torda, Tony Pinter, Ann Pinter, Mrs. Joseph Bodnar, Ted Beres, president of the Sports Club, Frances Beres, Betty Knapp, Helen Oravis, Patty Oravis, Mike Gyurko, Joseph Semetko, Joseph Kovach, James Kovach, Mrs. Matusz, Mrs. Szalay, Mr. and Mrs. Ted Szalay, Andrew Kleri, Bert Szilagyi, Nick Yuhasz, who was bartender, Mrs. Emery Gall, manager of Branch 361, Louis F. Kostley, manager of Branch 14, John Bozsvay, Joseph M. Toth, a group of Branch 366-ers, another group from Branch 361, and others. There were attractive door prizes and the coffee and Hungarian “fánk” were appetizing. We ought to have another get-together like this one next fall, say, about the first of November. This year Branch 296 will be represented by four men’s teams and two women’s teams. This is a drop of one men’s team over last year. Thirty-one men and women will make the trip to Buffalo, New York. The mode of travel is still not definite, but in all probability it will be by chartered bus. Non-bowlers interested in making the trip and taking part in the social activities are very welcome to do so. The Saturday night banquet and dance will cost them only 86.00. You must order your ticket in advance. * * This year the branch entered a team in the Fraternal League which bowls on Monday nights. For a while they almost edged out the first place Moose team. But it looks as if they will have to be contented with second place. The bowlers on this team are Lou Koprivnikar, Joe Balia, Alex Szuch, Tom Faix and Ed Mattie. Other organizations represented in the Fraternal League are the Moose, Falcons, American Legion, Eagles, PLMS, 7th Street Sportsmen and the Kiwanis. * if. * Members wishing to attend the 40th Anniversary banquet on Sunday, April 8th, are urged to get their reservations in soon. The cost per ticket is $2.50, which ticket may be obtained from any of the branch officers. Condolences to the James Zigarella family upon the passing away of Jimmy’s sister. This is the second death in the family in less than a year.
