On this date, officers and members of two outstanding fraternal organizations — the former Verhovay Chicago Branch No. 50 and former Rákóczi Chicago Branch No. 101 — met to demonstrate before the Chicago Southside audience that cooperation and understanding prevail and that joint fraternal and social affairs can be successfully undertaken. On the same platform, President Stephen Szekely, of Branch No. 50; and President Joseph Kerek, of Branch No. 101, shook hands and tendered their greetings to the audience by extending a hearty hand shake to everyone. John Szalanczy, former National Treasurer, now retired and residing in Chicago, introduced the background to the events that led up to the Hand Shake and Get Acquainted affair, and portrayed his impressions of how unification had been achieved and completed at the Home Office. He expressed further his best wishes for closer and greater cooperation between the two local participating branches. High light of the day came when Elmer Charles, Field Manager, representing the Home Office Staff, was received with an ovation preceding his address. Mr. Charles awed the audience by his excellence of oration. He lavished praise on the officers and members of the Chicago branches for their progressive vision of seeing that their future hopes for better social endeavors lie in joint cooperation. Everyone listened with great interest as Mr. Charles outlined how other branches in other cities, working together, are attaining greater success because of their joint affairs. It is desired to point out here that Mr. Charles’s popularity stemmed from his recognition of familiar faces and recollection of names. The members of the clergy, representing four different denominations, gave generously of their On Sunday, September 23rd, an j example of true fraternalism was > demonstrated when the bowlers of Branch 296-V., Springdale, Pa., were host to two men’s and two women’s team from Branch 39-V., Beaver Falls, Pa. Although Branch 296-V did not fare well so far as the scores were concerned, it was a pleasure to bowl a group of men and women from a neighboring branch. This kind of thing should certainly be done more often as it is an excellent opportunity to get acquainted with the members of other branches. After bowling, the players returned to the Branch 296-V Home where they were feted with lunch and refreshments followed by dancing. The members of the clergy pointed to the fact that the officers’ corps of local William Penn Fraternal Association branches are made up of mixed religions groups, yet harmony and understanding prevail. They tendered their* hopes for a bright future. The program was spotted with instrumental and vocal selections by outstanding local artists, and their appropriate ' appearance in the program enhanced an already short but inspiring afternoon.
