September 19, 1956 PAGE 13 William Penn Verhov ay Watchtower f By JOSEPH J. HORVATH — Cleveland, Ohio í Congratulation to Branch 14 and to the Home Office for the new sign on the Buckeye Road Building. The 25 year anniversary banquet of the “Öreg Amerika sok’* will be held October 14th, beginning 1:00 P. M., at Bethlen Hall. E. Blvd. and Buckeye Road. Admission will be $2.50 a person. This organization is á fine one numbering about 6,000 members. Coloman Kolozsvary is president, Andrew Dono secretary, and Mrs. A. Balaszik treasurer . Frank Oravis was elected president of the St. John’s Sport Club ... Judge Joseph Stearns was at the One World Day Cultural Garden Celebration ... We learned that Bert and Marge Luscik went to the dedication of a shrine near Cleveland, Ohio. The shrine and property will be administered by St. John’s Greek Catholic Church on Buckeye Road ... We saw the former Mary Fejes and Julia Mai: at the First Hungarian Reformed Church bazaar ... We heard that Mr. and Mrs. John Bosway were in an accident in July. After hospitalization for three weeks, Mrs. Bosway is now at home and feeling better The Branch 14 Annual Grape Festival will be held on Sunday, October 14, 1956. at 8637 Buckeye Road. A good orchestra will play for the affair, there will be Hungarian dances done by a specialty group, and there will be an abundance of refreshments, Hungarian fánk, sandwiches and coffee. Altho it rained, the “Öreg Amerikások” had a successful outing on August 5th. When it started to pour, yours truly took off. We went to Our Lady of Hungary Home on Lander Road in Chagrin Falls Township, Ohio. The occasion was the observance of St. Stephen’s Day sponsored by the American Catholic Society on Sunday, August 19th. His Excellency, Bishop Joseph Annbring of Superior, Wisconsin, who is of Hungarian extraction, spoke on the history of the tolling of the church bells at noon throughout the world in all Catholic churches. The Hungarian clergy, led by Msgr. Tanos and Msgr. Koller, Was present. About two thousand people attended’. We heard that next year there will be an even greater observance of this day. We derived this knowledge from a sermon heard on Sunday, September 2d: that the Catholic Church celebrates St. Stephen’s Day on September 2d and that August 20th is the day when the hand of King St. Stephen was taken to Budapest, Hungary. We heard that Dr. Andrew Kovács, Director, and John Sabo, National Auditor, no longer are members of the National Tournament Executive Committee. Too bad. Both are good men. The next William Penn Bowling Tournament will be held in Dayton, Ohio, as reported in the August issue of our WILLIAM PENN. This fact must please Dayton Director Louis Vassy who will lend his energies to assure the success of our society’s 1957 national get-together. Joseph Semetko, vice president of Branch 14, goes to fish at Port Clinton, Ohio, maintaining that the catch is larger there... Frank R. Pokorny, Jr. likes our column. He is one of the successful candidates, Democrat, from the primaries last May... Joseph Szalay and Andrew Balaszik, deputy sheriffs, were directing traffic at the celebration of King St. Stephen of Hungary Day... Coloman Fuzy was retained as manager of the William Penn Home on Buckeye Road ... Louis Kostley, secretary and manager of Branch 14, is on the go most of the time in his quest for new members. Just a reminder that the elections are only about six weeks away. Pick the candidate who will represent Y-O-U, the people of the community, not just the special interests. My own interest in government stems from my interest in people. Therefore, during my first term as state representative, the one thought always in my mind was: Will it benefit the people? Will it help our city, county and state? These aforegoing questions guided my voting. My record on labor legislation benefits has been 100%. I am again candidate on the Democratic ticket for the elective position of state representative. Please support the name Joseph J. Horvath and solicit your friends to do likewise. My many thanks to you. In the October issue I shall try to give you a synopsis of the candidates who are members of the William Penn, or are related to members of our association, that is, from Cleveland and vicinity. If, however, other members in other states, who are running in politics, would like to have their names and offices to which they aspire appear in this column, I should be fain to write about them. May I suggest that these requests be transmitted thru the respective branch managers and sent in no later than September 30th, so that I may have time to sort and arrange my material for the October issue. Here thanks also. Judge Louis Petrash is up for reelection next year, and we feel that he will be a sure winner. He has devoted many years to Hungarian affairs, so give this respected gentlemanébe support he so well deserves. Bela Balogh is looking forward to the William Penn National Bowling Tournament next May. Bela, for your information, is one of our better bowlers in Cleveland. We are wondering what happened to “Burma Shorts” Piscalko for we haven’t Seen him all summer. While there are improvements going on at the William Penn Home here in Cleveland, we suggest that the office be moved downstairs into No. 2 hall. Our elderly members find it hard to walk up those stairs. Ex animo, JOSEPH HORVATH 8637 Buckeye Road c. o. William Penn Home Cleveland 4, Ohio----------£**--------------DO YOU KNOW? As mentioned in this column last month. Branch 296-V entered a float Sn borough’s Golden Jubilee parade on July 7th. It won first prize of $75 in its class. The purpose of the float was twofold: to show the purpose and the origin of the organization. A hay wagon, loaned by Julius Telegdy, was framed so that the sides of the wagon appeared tapered. And on the back of the wagon a huge keystone was constructed. The float was then covered with thousands of white facial tissues which from a distance gave the appearance of flowers. The keystone was outlined with blue paper roping and on the face of the keystone appeared the name William Penn. Along the side of the float were three brightly colored placards, stating “Fraternalism, Recreation and Insurance.” The float was pulled by a jeep loaned by William Snyder. On the float were several members representing the various activities Director John P. Balia, in a William Penn costume, stood against the keystone. Seated next to him was Anna Marie Fintor and Kathy Madeja dressed in native costume, depicting the Hungarian origin of the organization. In the center were Irvin Mamros and Elaine Saellam representing the bowlers. On the front end Ronnie Balia and two of his friends were seated, representing the midget ball players which the branch hopes to sponsor next year. To show that the organization was founded by coal miners, the float was escorted by a number of members, wearing miner’s helmets. These members were Julius Telegdy, Jimmy 50th Anniversary of Branch Manager and Wife Sunday, August 19, 1956, marked for Mr. and Mrs. Nicholas Palla, Sr. * a very7 great occasion in their lives. They lived to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. The Verhovay segment of our society, particularly that of the midwest area, needs no introduction to the name of Nicholas’ Palla, Sr., a member who has through the years, been very active in association affairs, a veteran secretary then manager • of Branch 130-V, East Chicago, Indiana, and regular convention delegate. Mr. Palla has played a salient role in the development of the branch he so faithfully manages. • We are happy to report that after Mass in the Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church and the blessing of their union by Father Joseph Sipos, Pastor, the elder Pallas were honored with a banquet at the Elks Ballroom. Their loving children sponsored the affair at which relatives, friends and other well-wishers jointly honored the celebrating couple. Our congratulations and best wishes too!-------------------------DO YOU KNOW? Speeding on U.S. streets and highways last year killed 12,700 men, women and children.
