Puzzle Contest #165 with Lizzy Cseh-Hadzinsky r — — — — — — — — — — — -i St. Elizabeth of Hungary Catholic Church This past Christmas, my family attended services at St. Elizabeth of Hungary RC Church on Buckeye Road in Cleveland. Although I have been to this religious complex dozens of times for services and ethnic celebrations, on this most recent visit I was particularly struck by the grandeur of the church, gaining a new-found appreciation for what a spectacular place it is. Following Mass, I spent about 30 minutes walking my daughter Emerencia around the church. We gazed at the beautiful stained glass windows depicting St. Erzsébet and other Magyar saints. The altar, baptismal font, Christmas manger, columns, arched ceiling and gigantic chandeliers made for an awe-inspiring experience. A few years ago I toured the St. István Basilica in Budapest, and, in my humble opinion, St. Elizabeth’s is more impressive. St. Elizabeth’s was the first Magyar parish in America, established by Hungarian missionary the Rev. Charles Boehm in 1893. A wooden-framed church served as its initial house of worship. As the flow of immigrants to the area increased, it was apparent that the building was much too small to accommodate the thousands of parishioners in the Buckeye Road vicinity. After much discussion and fundraising, construction of a new limestone facade church, as well as a parish house and school, began in 1918 and was completed four years later in 1922. This historically significant house of worship has been on the National List of Historic Places since 1976. It stands just a few minutes drive southeast from downtown Cleveland. Tours can be arranged by calling the church rectory and talking to either the current pastor, the Rev. András Mezei, or his secretary. Better yet, attend a Mass, as it is well worth your time and effort. For more information about St. Elizabeth Church, log onto the church website at www.stelizabethcleveland.org. An interesting article with photos entitled “This Incredible Gothic Church In Cleveland Was The First Hungarian Church In The Country” can be found at www.onlyinyourstate.com. In the search box, type “St. Elizabeth,” then select Cleveland in the filter. The March 2019 wordsearch includes 14 clues about St. Elizabeth Church. Good luck! Happy spring!
