Branch News generally make the trees produce extraordinary autumn colors for us, so that is something beautiful to watch for. Happy football season to everyone, too! Branch 349 Weirton, WV by Joyce Nicholson Greetings from WPA branch 349 in the Ohio Valley Tri-State area! Our branch's Join Hands Day project this year was to celebrate and honor our veterans at the annual Jefferson County Veterans Association picnic held Saturday, July 21, at Friendship Park in Smithfield, Ohio. About 85 to 90 people attended; among them were veterans who served in WWII, Korea, the Cold War, Vietnam or Desert Storm and current military members. All branches of our military were represented, and several of their family members were present. Our WPA branch helped provide food and service for this event which paid respect to our military. Congratulations to the golf team of Dave Kozak, Tom House, Rick Smith and Harry Nicholson who won fourth place at the WPA Golf Tournament in July. As always, it was great fun, great food and great fraternalism. Plus, this team finally won some prize money! On Sunday, Aug. 5, Harry and I took the short drive to Youngstown, Ohio, to join in the annual Hungarian Day Festival (Magyar Nap). The churches and Hungarian societies of the greater Youngstown area join together for this day of festivities, featuring delicious Hungarian cuisine and demonstrations of dancing, music and song. Kathy Novak, Vice Chair of the WPA Board, was serving up the chicken paprikás, kolbász and pastries to a line of people that seemed to never end. Thanks to Kathy and everyone who put this event together. It was enjoyable. Have a great end-of-summer weekend this Labor Day; fly the flag and stay safe. Let us never forget to observe Patriot Day on Sept. 11. Say a prayer for those who died or were injured in the terrorist attacks on the USA in 2001. God bless all first responders everywhere. We extend good wishes to those members with birthdays and anniversaries this month. Among those celebrating a birthday in September are Emily Nicholson, Deborah Toth and Kathy Novak. Our sincere condolences to the family of Andrew Zelk Jr. on his passing. Soon, we will be focusing on fall and winter holidays and events. For additional information about Branch 349 activities, or if you have any news you wish to share, please call Joyce Nicholson at 740-264-6238. Officially, fall starts on Sept. 23 this year. We also celebrate Labor Day on Sept. 3. Not to shock anyone, but Christmas is right around the corner! In next month's article, a list of all Branch 352 members who received a scholarship check for the 2018-2019 school year will be published. Instructions for those applicants applying for a 2019-2020 WPA scholarship grant will soon be published in William Penn Life. Remember to donate to the William Penn Fraternal Association Scholarship Foundation, Inc., so that William Penn Association can continue to offer scholarship grants to our deserving future scholars. The 17th anniversary of 9/11 is this year. In remembrance, we should all volunteer for whatever cause you most care about. That is one of the best ways to remember the sacrifices made by so many. If you do volunteer, please remember to let us know so that we can all share in your accomplishments. Happy birthday to all those celebrating a birthday this month. May you be blessed with many more, and may all of them be healthy! Hope anyone feeling under the weather will soon be feeling well. We offer our condolences to anyone who has lost a loved one recently. If you need help with any insurance questions, whether it is to change a beneficiary or to report a lost policy, please contact me by phone at 4Í2-932-3170 or by email at dmckinsey@hotmail.com. I will be happy to assist you. Branch 800 Altoona, PA by Joan B. Ballash Happy Labor Day! Time to go with family and friends for one last summer outing.
