Branch News Members of the WPA Magyar Folk Dancers perform for residents of Bethlen Communities during Bethlen’s annual Hungarian picnic on July 29. a success, and I believe all had a good time. The weather cooperated, the food was good and camaraderie was perfect. The parking was a little tricky this year as the neighboring zoo was hosting a free concert, and there were vehicles everywhere. The next Branch 132 meeting will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 4, at 5:00 p.m. at Martin's Supermarket Deli (first floor) on Ireland Road, South Bend. We will begin planning the date for the Christmas party. Branch 132 once again sponsored a men's softball team for 2018. They finished the season with a record of 12 wins and 8 losses. They are currently playing in the city tournament, and I will report results next time. Branch 226 McKeesport, PA by Judit Ganchuk It's Life Insurance Awareness Month! Best of luck to all those students returning to classes! Branch 249 Dayton, OH by Mark Schmidt Here we are, three fourths of the way through the year. Labor Day is upon us. Always held on the first Monday in September, Labor Day was the idea of Peter J. Maguire, a labor union leader who in 1882 proposed a celebration honoring the American worker. The date chosen was simply "convenient" because it was midway between the Fourth of July and Thanksgiving. Although the day's focus on organized labor has diminished over the years, the holiday has become a way to mark the end of the summer season and the start of the school year. But, with the similarities that Labor Day shares with fraternalism and the beginnings of WPA—that is, people grouping together as one for the benefit of many-maybe we could now consider it "Fraternal Day," a time when we all look out for our fellow man. Just a thought as we get back to the routine of school, work and life. I want to thank the members of Branch 249 and the Magyar Club of Dayton for the non-routine contributions of money, baking and many dozens of pastries that were donated for the WPA Picnic in Hiram, Ohio. I also want to thank Cindy Dobo of Dobo's Delights Bake Shoppe in Piqua, Ohio, for her most generous supply of cookies, pastries and Dobos fortes. All these pastries were sold, and the proceeds were given to the WPFA Scholarship Foundation. Check out Cindy's goods at mow. dobosdelights.com and have her ship some to you. Speaking of the WPA Picnic, we'll have more to report on that in the next issue. I was looking forward to seeing many old friends and making many new ones as we came together. Truly, fraternalism at its best. Locally, we have some future events to note. First, there's the Magyar Club Bacon Fry, on Sunday, Sept. 2, at 1:00 p.m. at Sinclair Park off of Shoup Mill Road. The Club will supply the bread, bacon and veggies. Please bring a side dish to share. Also, mark your calendars for WILLIAM PENN LIFE 0 September 2018 0 23
