Branch News his shadow, but don't fret, it only means 42 more days of winter. With the activities going on in all the WPA branches, I'm sure those days will fly by. Well, the gulyás making was a great success. We cooked on Friday, packaged on Saturday and have been selling ever since! Several members were involved in the preparation, cooking, selling and buying of the gulyás. We'll have a final report next month, but for the time being let's just say it was a great weekend of fellowship and fratemalism. We saw some old friends, made some new friends and had a great time. Oh, and the early returns indicate the gulyás tastes great! Thank you, John Toth! We made about 250 quarts of gulyás and so far have raised more than $1,000 for our church. We hope to do this project twice a year. The demand really surprised us. We were most appreciative of those who donated supplies and provisions necessary for making the gulyás. Special thanks to Mark S. Maskarinec, John and Vera Recktosh, Dianne Schneider, John Toth, Ruth Toth, Lisa S. Toth-Maskarinec and Michelle Zamberry for their donations to this project. Our next fundraising project will be selling baked goods for Easter. Another new fundraiser our branch will be having will be a "Dining for Dough Luncheon" at Uno's Chicago Restaurant at the Waterfront in Homestead. The date and time have not been set but it will be on a Sunday in April. The branch will receive a percentage on the amount of money spent on food, and Blue Moon will be donating pilsner glasses which everyone in attendance will be able to decorate and take home. This promises to be a fun event in which every one-male and female, young and old—can participate. What a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon: go to church, then come to Uno's. That brings us to our golf outing. Our outing will again be held Aug. 13 at Butler's Golf Course. There will be prizes for the winning foursome and the skill shot winners. We're looking for more golfers, more diners, more donors and especially more sponsors. As always, we're on the hunt for new and exciting auction items. If you have any ideas or things you'd like to see, please give me a call. We hope to see you all there. The outing is "only" five months away. Belated birthday greetings go out to Drs. Marty and Michael Maskarinec, brothers of Branch Vice President Mark Maskarinec. Marty was the first to request gulyás. Anyone know how to ship to Moline, Illinois? Very special birthday wishes go to our beloved "Aunt Pat," Patricia Walochik, on her 90th birthday on March 17. For those of you who attended our golf outing last year, Pat was honored for being one of the senior members of our branch. Pat's family came from Atlanta and Spain to be on hand for her award and to participate in our golf outing. May you have many wonderful birthdays to come. Special get well wishes continue to be sent to branch member Vera Recktosh. It is great to see Vera up and around and doing so wonderfully after her heart attack. Please, Vera, do us all a favor and listen to your doctors and take it easy. We need you around for a long time. Also, get well wishes to branch member George Rostival after his recent hospitalization. Keep on smiling, Cobbie. Stay warm and happy and try and support not only our branch events but the WPA bowling and golf tournaments. They're for a worthy cause and always fun. Branch 129 Columbus, OH by Debbie Lewis Greetings from Columbus, Ohio. We have been having another mild winter so far. We have had to shovel snow only once or twice, and we have been experiencing milder temperatures. Hopefully, the weather will stay the same until spring starts later this month. Special days this month include Ash Wednesday on March 1, the beginning of Daylight Saving Time on March 12 (don't forget to turn your clocks forward one hour), the anniversary of the 1848 War of Independence on March 15, St. Patrick's Day on March 17 and the beginning of spring on March 20. I was able to attend my first White Rose Ball on Feb. 4 in Dearborn, Mich., at the beautiful Dearborn Inn. I would like to thank the members of the Hungarian Arts Club of Detroit for all of their hard work in hosting and preserving this wonderful Hungarian tradition. I am already looking forward to being able to attend next year. Our next branch meeting will be held on Tuesday, March 7, at the Hungarian Reformed Church located at 365 Woodrow Avenue in Columbus beginning at 4:30 p.m. Please plan on attending to discuss activities for the coming year. We would like to have new input from our members. If you can't make it, call and give us your input. The Hungarian Cultural Association invites you to join in commemorating the 1848 War of Independence on Sunday, March 19, at the Hungarian Reformed Church. Worship service will begin at 10:00 a.m., followed by a commemoration program and dinner. Menu includes pörkölt (stew), nokedli (dumplings), green beans, cucumber salad, kifli, coffee and lemonade. Reservations are required. Please call Erzsi Wagner at 614-738-4415 by March 12. Some of our members are making plans to attend the WPA Bowling Tournament on April 28 and 29 in Washington, Pa. We already have one team and would like to have at least one more. This is a wonderful fraternal event and a great time to see old friends and make new ones. We congratulate all those celebrating birthdays, anniversaries and additions to their families. Get well wishes to all who have been ill or hospitalized, especially Velma Nadalin. Hope all have a speedy recovery. We also extend our sincere sympathy to all who have recently lost a loved one. For all your life insurance and annuity needs, or if you have any news you would like to share, please contact Debbie Lewis at 614-875-9968 or email DAL9968@aol.com. 24 0 March 2017 ° WILLIAM PENN LIFE
