Association well at annual White DEABORN, MI - William Penn Association once again demonstrated its commitment to preserving the Hungarian culture in America when nearly its entire Board of Directors and their spouses attended the 59th Fehér Rózsa Bál (White Rose Ball) Feb. 4 in Dearborn, Mich. In addition, many members from nearby Branch 18 Lincoln Park, Mich., attended the black-tie gala. The event, hosted by the Hungarian Arts Club, was held at the historic Dearborn Inn. WPA member Ursula Markovits hosted the Benefactor Reception prior to the ball, while her husband and fellow WPA member Tamás Markovits served as the ball's master of ceremonies. The debutantes — all of whom are of Hungarian descent -- and their escorts looked elegant as they were introduced. The young ladies took to the dance floor to first waltz with their fathers and then dance with their escorts. The traditional Palotás (or Palace Dance), which originated in the 15th century, was graciously-represented Rose Ball performed in a dignified manner by the debutantes and their escorts. Afterward, all were invited to dance to music provided by the group, Harmonia. All those in attendance were pleased to learn that this Hungarian tradition will continue in 2018 with the 60th Fehér Rózsa Bál. The WPA Board wishes to thank the officers and members of The Hungarian Arts Club and Branch 18 for the warm hospitality that was extended to the board members and their spouses and families over the weekend. Special thanks go to Branch 18 for the hospitality that was extended to all at the Friday night dinner at the Hungarian Rhapsody Restaurant in Southgate, Mich. Steve Szatmári and his staff prepared a delicious Hungarian dinner for the WPA contingent, which made for a perfect night. In lieu of an arts scholarship, proceeds from this year's White Rose Ball will be donated to Holy Cross Hungarian Roman Catholic Parish of Detroit. McKeesport club to commemorate War of Independence McKEESPORT, PA - The McKeesport Hungarian Social Club will be hosting a special program to commemorate the 1848 Hungarian War of Independence on Sunday, March 19. The event will be held at the club, 3004 Walnut St., McKeesport, beginning at 3:00 p.m. Food and refreshments will be served following the program. There is no admission, but donations will be accepted. The club will also be celebrating its 100th anniversary. For more information, contact Kathy at 412-664-4042. Hungarian cooking classes scheduled ALLEN PARK, Ml - Elizabeth Krajcz is once again teaching Hungarian cooking at the American Hungarian Reformed Church (AHRC) in Allen Park and at the Hungarian American Cultural Center (HACC) in Taylor on several Saturdays in March. Each class runs from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The featured menu of the day will be served for lunch: • March 11 (AHRC) - Chicken Paprikás with dumplings; Hungarian cucumbers; Kalács with raisins. • March 18 (HACC) - Dried bean soup with vegetables; stuffed pork loin with spinach and bacon; Rácsos (sheet cake with nuts and apricot). • March 25 (HACC) - Vegetable soup with cream of wheat dumplings; layered potatoes with kolbász; Zserbó (multilayered sheet cake). The cost is $35 per class by prepayment only. No walk-ins will be accepted. Please indicate on your check the dates of each class you wish to take. You may register for one, two or all three. All reservations MUST be received by noon on the Wednesday of the week of the class.
