Our branch family Christmas party will be held Dec. 9. Details of the day and winners of the scholarship raffle will be in next month's article. Special thanks to the Home Office for all the support and generosity they give to all the WPA branches hosting Christmas fraternal gatherings for members of all ages to enjoy. The Youngstown Hungarian Federation and Freedom Fighters of 1956 hosted the annual commemorative program for the 1956 Revolution on Oct. 22 at the Franciscan Friary. The outdoor ceremony at the memorial statue was blessed with beautiful weather, allowing the attendees to enjoy a nice fall afternoon. A brief history of Maiéter Pál was read by Alyssa Schauer and a Hungarian poem was read by Irene Szurovy. Songs and prayers were part of the program, with everyone participating. Candles were placed at the base of the memorial before the attendees gathered in the social hall for fellowship and refreshments. The Hungarian Community of Youngstown held its traditional Members of Branch 34 recently attended a fundraising event supporting the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh Free Care Fund. Thanksgiving Vesper services on Nov. 21 at St. Stephen of Hungary worship site, hosted by Holy Apostle Parish. The four Hungarian churches took part in this annual ecumenical service. Hope some of our members get a chance to visit the University of Pittsburgh Holiday Open House on Dec. 3. The festival is quite a beautiful day of ethnic traditions, food and talent. Watch for information on WPA events in 2018. Some changes are being made to offer a variety of places for members to travel and be a part of great fraternal activities. October was a busy month in Northeast Ohio. Among the month's numerous events were the annual meeting of the Ohio Fraternal Alliance, the 125th anniversary celebration of St. Elizabeth of Hungary Parish of Cleveland and the 21st Vintner Dinner hosted by the Cleveland Hungarian Heritage Society. For more on these and other events, see the "In the Community" and "Magyar Matters" sections in this issue. With all the hustle and bustle going on this time of year, we can't forget the true meaning of this holiday - the birth of Jesus. So, let's also wish everyone celebrating a birthday or anniversary a wonderful day. It's always hard to have to lose a loved one, but at this time of the year, it seems more difficult. We express sincere sympathy with thoughts and prayers to all those suffering a loss at this time. Get well wishes to all those under the weather.
