Aging Well with Cathy Graham Retirement plannin WHEN IT COMES to retirement, there are two distinct classes of people: those who do and those who do not. A great number of the people I deal with are full-throttle the second they retire, never missing the daily grind for an instant. Within weeks, their calendars are full and they have a renewed sense of spirited engagement in life. The world is once again a blank canvas, and there is no stopping their flying paint brushes. The other group is retired but not inspired. I recently had a conversation with a woman who explained that her husband had been down in the dumps since he retired from a job he wasn't quite fond of. His sadness drags her down as his pouty demeanor sucks the energy right out of her first cup of coffee. Years of dreaming about the day you no longer have to clock in can trigger doubts and feelings of loss once retirement occurs. Retirement is a big change. Those who click their heels and ride off into the sunset most likely had a plan in place to pursue splendid living. There isn't any stage in life that works out well when we don't have a plan, a reason, a purpose. If you believe that you retire and then you die, then that's your plan. On average we each will experience 18.5 years of retirement, beginning at the age of 65. Having your mental, physical and financial health in order will be a big advantage. Having a purpose will seal the deal. The happily retired have self-worth and a sense of accomplishment. They don't squander days, opportunities or chances. They are accurate and precise when it comes to living. A "no regrets "attitude will comfort and sustain them no matter what happens.
