Thanks to our fraternal director and everyone who came. Hope to see you again next year! Congratulations to our son and daughter-in-law for completing the Pittsburgh Half-Marathon. Way to go!! Special happy birthday wishes to my brother Gary and everyone celebrating their birthdays in June. Many, many more. Special anniversary wishes to Andy and Valerie and to my niece and nephew, Nicole and Bob. Many, many more. If you have any news you would like to share, please contact Marguerite McNelis at 412-421-6031. Branch 40 Martins Ferry, OH Branch 349 Weirton, WV by Joyce Nicholson Greetings from the WPA branches of Martins Ferry and Weirton in the Ohio Valley area! Roll out those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer. Slow down, kick back and just relax. The longest day of the year, the Summer Solstice, falls on June 21 and is the start of summer. Time to enjoy great weather (hopefully!), vacations, baseball, pools, picnics and all else that goes along with warmer weather. So, grab your favorite cold beverage and enjoy the summer.. .because before you know it, it will be fall. Keep the date open for Sunday, Aug. 27. That's the date for our next joint picnic with the Ohio Valley Hungarian Club at Warren Township Park in Yorkville, Ohio at 1:00 p.m. We've ordered good weather, so please bring a dessert or side dish to share. And, if you plan to roast bacon around the fire pit, bring your own chair and bacon fork. Everything else will be provided. Come hungry as there's always plenty of really good food! Unfortunately, Hungary withdrew its bid to host the 2024 Olympic games, leaving only two other places in contention to host the games: Los Angeles and Paris. With so many medal winners from Hungary in the last Olympics, I believe if the next summer games would have been hosted in Hungary, it would have been a great time to shine and show off Budapest, the surrounding areas and the wonderful, friendly people. There's always 2028! Flag Day is June 14, so fly your flag proudly! Then say a prayer for the men and women in the armed forces who protect our freedom and the right to fly that flag. And don't forget Father's Day is June 18. We extend good wishes to those members with birthdays and anniversaries this month. Birthdays for June include Anne Marie Schmidt, Richard Sarosi, Kerri Kramer and Debbie Evans. For information about branch activities, please call Joyce Nicholson at 740-264-6238. Branch 88 Rural Valley, PA by Joe Chobody Branch 88 congratulates member Frank Nagy on being named Class 3A Girls Basketball Coach of the Year by the Pennsylvania Sports Writers Association. Frank led the West Shamokin Lady Wolves to a 27-3 record in route to a semi-final game in the PIAA state tournament. The Lady Wolves were the only public school in the final four. The Lady Wolves also claimed the Heritage Conference and Class 3A District 6 championships. Also honored was Olivia Fusaro, granddaughter of Jennie Fusaro, for being selected 3rd Team All-State. Frank and Olivia were also named Coach of the Year and Player of the Year, respectively, by the Leader Times and the Indiana Gazette. Once again, congratulations on a great season. Branch 89 Homestead, PA by Lisa S. Toth-Maskarinec Branch 89 is proud to congratulate one of our members, Dr. Michael W. Finikiotis (pictured below), on being selected one of Pittsburgh's best doctors by the experts at Best Doctors, Inc., and published in the May 2017 issue of Pittsburgh Magazine. Many members of our branch owe their very lives to him, including me. He is one of the best doctors out there, and this honor is very well deserved. Congratulations, Dr. Mike. We know how good you are, and it's great you were recognized with this honor. Branch 89 extends its deepest sympathies to branch members Debra and Michelle Zamberry on the recent death of their mother, Edith. Edith attended many WPA events with her daughters and was even a spotter at some of our golf outings. She was a former school bus driver, an elder of her church and an overall nice woman.
