There is so much good in the world; sometimes the bad news drowns out what people and groups are doing to improve their local communities. Best wishes for a blessed Easter among friends and family. Trees have started to leaf out, and birds are starting to nest. All of God's glory reminds us that this is the time of Easter, when the good Lord sent His son to save us from ourselves. What a wonderful time to count our blessings. We had the pleasure of attending the Soup and Learn luncheon presented by the Hungarian Cultural Association of Columbus on Feb. 12 at the Hungarian Reformed Church. The speaker was Dan Varga, better known as the Hungarian Butcher. Dan is a renowned Columbus chef who has opened a charcuterie business, providing a modern twist on recipes taught to him by his grandmother, a first-generation Hungarian immigrant. Dan makes kolbász and sausages of all types, szalonna (bacon), sonka (ham) and specialties like head cheese and liverwurst páté. He uses Mangalica pasture-raised, heritage breed hogs from local farms. Stop by the North Market at Two Brothers Butcher Shoppe (59 Spruce St., Columbus) to check out his selection of Hungarian meats and specialties. This is a pleasant drive from Dayton, and there are other vendors at the North Market. Anne Marie and I had the pleasure of going to Cleveland to Paprika! on March 4. The dinner-dance was a gala affair presented by the Cleveland Hungarian Development Panel. We had a sumptuous Hungarian meal, pastries and entertainment and danced the night away to the beautiful music of Harmonia. A silent auction featuring many Hungarian delights and other beautiful items was held. This month, there are many national and local events. First, there is the Branch 249 meeting on April 8 at 1:00 p.m. at McAuley Hall at Queen of Martyrs Church. We will be discussing upcoming events and Join Hands Day. See you there. Second, the WPA Bowling Tournament will be held April 28 and 29 at the Meadows Racetrack & Casino in Washington, Pa. Third, the Magyar Club of Dayton will host its Annual Spring Dance on Saturday, April 29, at 6:00 p.m. at the American Czechoslovakian Club on Valley Street in Dayton. Dinner is available before George Bátyi and the Gypsy Strings play away the evening. Cost is $15 for club members, $20 for non-members. Call Gail Robison at 937-836-2549 for reservations. Fourth, Branch 249 will hold its annual Hungarian Day with the Dayton Dragons baseball team on Sunday, April 30, at 2:00 p.m. The game will include food and drinks as we join another record-breaking sell-out crowd at 5/3 Field. We will have a climate-controlled suite in the upper deck to watch the game. Cost is $15 for Branch 249 members, $25 for guests. Call Mark Schmidt soon at 937-667-1211 as tickets are going fast. Our next two meeting dates are April 6 and May 11. We meet at King's Family Restaurant in New Kensington at 6:30 p.m. Our meetings are very casual. We'll be tossing around more ideas for our next branch Join Hands Day project, thinking about our annual branch bacon roast in the fall and even preplanning our branch family Christmas party. (Never too early to look ahead!). Please join us! For our April meeting, we invite you to join in our WPA Easter Basket project as we collect items for Beverly's Birthdays. A Pittsburghbased non-profit founded by Megs Yunn, this inspiring organization provides birthday celebrations for homeless children. Beverly, the inspiration for this organization, is a beautiful young girl from the Pittsburgh area. Megs learned that Beverly had never had her own birthday party or even her own slice of birthday cake. Megs thought everyone has a birthday, right?
