Branch News Branch 89 member Patricia Walochik (above left), celebrated her 90th birthday in March. She's pictured with her granddaughter and fellow branch member Helena Walochik, who celebrates her birthday in April. Meanwhile Branch 89 members Stephanie Wittpenn (above right) celebrated her "Sweet 16" in February. ary? Hungarian Director Kristóf Deak's Best Live Action Short Film titled "Sing" is the first Hungarian win in that category. It's a 25-minute film set in the '90s in Budapest inspired by true events and follows a new girl in an award-winning school choir who must choose between standing up to a corrupt system or quietly fitting in. This is the second Hungarian film to earn an Oscar in the past two years, after last year's triumph of "Son of Saul" as Best Foreigh Language Film. Bravo! This year was the year that Otto Balogh from Budapest was to be the first Hungarian ever to race in the 1,000-mile trek across the wilderness in the Alaskan Iditarod, fulfilling a childhood dream that came from reading Jack London. He trained with 4-time Iditarod Champion Dallas Seavey and completed the qualifying races. Unfortunately, two hours before the March race kicked-off, this Hungarian "musher" scratched, citing health concerns. Well, there's always next year. Happy birthday to those with April birthdays, including Steve Charles, Dora McKinsey and Harry Nicholson. Get well to those who are ill and prayers to those in need. If you have any news to share, please let me know to include it here. For information about branch activities, please call Joyce Nicholson at 740-264-6238. Branch 89 Homestead, PA by Lisa S. Toth-Maskarinec We wish everyone a very happy and blessed Palm Sunday and Easter. We at Branch 89 are pleased to announce that we made gulyás by special demand on March 24 and 25. We thank everyone who ordered gulyás from us as well as those who came out and helped with our project. Special thanks go to the chefs, János Toth and Endre Csornán, and to our workers, including Rev. Lisa Kerestesi and her son Miles (who took a day off from school to help with this event); branch members Billy Ardale, Fred Gabocy, John and Vera Recktosh, Rudy and Janet Phillips, Dianne Schneider, Justin and Richard Toth; and branch officers John, Justin, Ruth Toth, Mark Maskarinec and Lisa S. Toth-Maskarinec. This project raised over $1,000 for our church. We plan on doing this project in the fall. The demand really surprised us, and we truly appreciate that we received so many donations of supplies and provisions necessary for making the gulyás. Special thanks to Mark S. Maskarinec, John Toth, Ruth Toth, and Lisa S. Toth-Maskarinec for not only their donations to this project but also for the electric potato peelers and chopper/dicer. These machines were godsends and helped speed things along. Without your generous donations, this project would not have been the huge success it was. Another new fundraiser our branch will be having will be a "Dining for Dough Luncheon" at Uno's Chicago Restaurant at the Waterfront in Homestead. The date and time have not been set, but it will be on a Sunday in late April or early May. The branch will receive a percentage on the amount of money spent on food, and in return, Blue Moon will be donating pilsner glasses which everyone in attendance will be able to decorate and take home. This promises to be a fun event. What a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon — go to church then come to Uno's. That brings us to our golf outing. Our golf outing has taken on a life of its own and is now a 12-month endeavor. Purely by word of mouth, our outing has grown by 15% each of the last three years. We believe that this year will be the same and we will again set a new attendance record. We have been in contact with the course (Butler's) and have set a date of Aug. 13. Gift bags for the winning foursome and the skill prize winners have been acquired, and we'll be adding more items as we go. We're not only looking for more golfers but more diners, more donors and especially more sponsors. Special thanks to branch member Billy Ardale for his donation of golf tees. Every little bit helps. As always, we're on the hunt for new and exciting auction items. If you have any ideas or things you'd like to see, please give me a call. The outing is "only" four months away. Remember our motto: "Go Big and Go Golfing!" Belated birthday greetings go out to our beloved "Aunt Pat," Patricia Walochik, on her 90th birthday on March 17. Pat was honored at our branch's golf banquet last year as being one of the senior members of our branch. Pat's family came from Atlanta and Spain to be on hand for her award and to participate in our golf outing. May you have many, many wonderful birthdays to come. Special April birthday greetings go out to our Branch Secretary-Trea-26 0 April 2017 ° WILLIAM PENN LIFE
