Sarosi CLEVELAND ~ The Cleveland Hungarian Development Panel (CHDP) hosted its 27th annual Paprika! Bál on Saturday, March 4, at the Ritz Carlton Hotel in Cleveland. During the event, the CHDP recognized The Cleveland Play House for its 102 years of serving the Cleveland theatre arts community and for its 2015 Tony Award for "Best Regional Theatre." The theme of Paprika! 2017 was "Tulips to Tony," in recognition of both Hungary's national flower and the Tony Award presented to the Cleveland Play House. The CHDP is a non-profit organization of dedicated volunteers who promote and support educational and cultural ties between Americans and Hungarians. The Cleveland Play House has featured many Hungarian artists and writers, as early as 1938 with the presentation of Liliom, a notable production by Hungarian playwright Ferenc Molnár. The CHDP was instrumental in bringing to Cleveland the Hungarian National Theatre from Cleveland's sister city in Hungary, Miskolc, and their production of Peter Miiller's Gloomy Sunday, which was presented in Hungarian along with a simultaneous translation. More information can be found on the CHDP website: www.clevelandhdp. org. Proceeds from the festivities and silent auction went to support grants and scholarships. Guests at Paprika! 2017 enjoyed a gourmet dinner which began with Kárfiolleves En Croute (cauliflower soup with puff pastry top); Magyaros Babsaláta (Hungarian bean salad); Plum sorbet with schnapps; and Bélszín Budapest-Módra, from the 1958 Hungarian Pavilion at the World's Fair in Brussels, Belgium (a dish of sauteed beef tenderloin with delicate sauce and topped with fried waffle potatoes). The presentation of the main course included a dining room with dimmed lights and the staff entering with the plates illuminated with magical piros (red) cubes. Desserts included Dobos Tortes, Krémes, miniature Hungarian fánk (donuts cooked to order) and fresh fruits. The entertainment was provided by Harmonia and the Viva Dance Studio whose ballroom dancers performed several waltzes and tangos. William Penn Association was recognized for its support of Paprika! 2017 and the representatives in attendance enjoyed a delightful evening. WPA members enjoying the Paprika!
