For Starters Baskets, ‘Challenge’ help fight hunger WHEN YOU COMBINE the holiday spirit with the fraternal spirit, you can create one powerful force for good. WPA proved that once again over the last several months of 2013 when our branches participated in our annual Holiday Basket program and our employees accepted the third "Home Office Challenge." Our branches demonstrated their members' fraternal spirit by creating and distributing a total of 113 baskets of food and other necessities worth more than $5,700 to families in need over the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. About 77 percent of our active branches participated in the latest Holiday Basket program. Our goal for this year is to achieve 100 percent participation. Meanwhile, the Home Office Challenge pitted the office's major departments—the President's, Secretary's and Treasurer's departments—against each other to see which could donate the most non-perishable items for the local food bank. The dry and canned goods donated by all three departments weighed a whopping 1,120.5 pounds Employees of the WPA's Secretary’s Department who won the third Home Office Challenge: (front, l-r) Mary A. Kelly-Lovasz, Antoinette A/l. Garofalo and Judith K. Chakey; (back, l-r) Alyssa Trunzo, Judit I. Borsay, Susan A/l. Robison, Debra S. Evans, Krista K. Broderick, Cassandra Holmes, Stephanie L Martincsek and Kerri L. Kramer. (Photo by Alexander Patho Photography) and were delivered to the food bank at Northside Common Ministries in mid-December. The Secretary's Department won the Challenge for the second time, but all three departments responded in the true fraternal spirit. We thank all those who helped in these efforts to fight hunger. Correction On page 26 of our January 2014 issue, we published a photo of children gathered around Santa Claus at a branch family Christmas party. We incorrectly identified the branch. That photo was actually from a party hosted by Branch 296 Springdale, Pa. We apologize for the error. Want to go green with your magazine?
