Hungarikums

This month, I present a rather new phenomenon that has been in official existence since July 2012. “Hungarikums” (or Hungaricums) are things that are special, unique and recognized worldwide as Hungarian. They must be of the highest quality and meet a long set of widely accepted standards of excellence. A panel of highpowered political types, the Hungarikum Commission, oversees the appointment of this honor.

Hungarikums are protected by the authority of the European Economic Union, which has established laws protecting designated Hungarikums from counterfeiting and cheap imitations. Special marking, labeling and packaging are required of any Hungarikum that is available for purchase, similar to a patent or copyright law. There are currently 309 items officially recognized as Hungarikums, including various foods, locations, persons, music, medicines and sports.
