Puzzle Contest #108 with Lizzy Cseh r___ — — — — — — — — n Hungarian churches and monasteries A vacation trip to Hungary is filled with history, music, culture and food. But, no matter where a traveler goes in the land of St. Stephen, there are churches. Being that Hungary is comprised mostly of Roman Catholics, the vast majority of those churches are dedicated to serving that segment of Christianity. Throughout Hungary, a tourist also can find churches serving Byzantine, Orthodox, Evangelical, Lutheran, Baptist, Reformist and Calvinist denominations. Other non-Christian houses of prayer and worship, including synagogues and mosques, can be found in Hungary. I recently received a gift from relatives living in Hungary. It is a beautiful and informative map entitled: “Magyarország Templomai és Kolostorai” (Hungarian Churches and Monasteries). This colorful chart depicts the major churches, basilicas and religious order headquarters through the land. Every town and village has at least one church. Although smaller in size than big city versions, each house of worship features beautiful artwork, craftsmanship and generational chronicles, if only on a small scale. The WPA Tour 2014 will include visits to many of these sites. One particular stopping point will be the Our Lady of Máriapócs Shrine. Located in eastern Hungary, this popular pilgrimage destination is one of the most inspiring in Hungary. (Note: A smaller version of Máriapócs can be found in nearby Burton, Ohio) Through my brief research of the subject I found two particularly interesting websites for detailed inquiry: www.templomok.hu www.mariapoch.ebni.com If you are in the mood to explore the Internet further, do a search that includes Hungarian churches and abbey locations. Wikipedia lists thousands of websites on Magyar churches, as well. The June 2014 puzzle contest includes 18 clues. Each clue is a site of a church that would be a wonderful place to visit when you journey to Hungary. Good Luck, and patronize those American-Hungarian picnics and events this summer.
