Branch News Branch 129 members Margaret Leonardo (left) and Olga Kovács help plant Powers at the Hungarian Reformed Church in Columbus during the branch's Join Hands Day project Branch 226 McKeesport, PA by Judit I. Borsay Hope all is well with everyone, especially those who are celebrating a birthday or anniversary in July. Hope the sun is brightening up your days. We're almost done setting in stone all of the plans for our oneday bus trip on Sunday, Sept. 15, to Hiram, Ohio, for the Hungarian Cultural Center of Northeastern Ohio's Annual Fall Festival/Szüreti Mulatság. We'll be leaving early because the Festival begins at noon and the dance performances begin at 3:00 p.m. Reserve your spot on our bus today by calling our Branch Coordinator Malvene Heyz at 412- 751-1898. Don't forget: McKeesport's ethnic food fest—International Village—will be Aug. 13 to 15. Admission is $2 to the Village, and then you can eat your way around the world, focusing, of course, on the Hungarian food booth. If you can't take the heat outside, cross the street and eat and relax inside the Free Hungarian Reformed Church's air-conditioned social hall where they sell Hungarian dinners. Our local Hungarian dance group will be performing, as well. If you have news to share here in the magazine, please contact Branch Coordinator Malvene Heyz at 412- 751-1898. Please keep those who have recently lost a loved one in your thoughts and prayers. Also, keep our military men and women in your thoughts and prayers this 4th of July. Because of them, we are "the land of the free and the home of the brave!" Branch 249 Dayton, OH by Mark Schmidt June flew by, as it always does. School is out, but with graduations, vacations, grass cutting, barbeques, weddings~arghh!~it seems there's something every day. What happened to those lazy days of summer I remember when I was young? Good thing June was a light month for local Hungarian activities. I always look forward to the 4th of July. Who can complain about an extra day off from work and having the traditional family cookout? Add to that the local bands, parades and fireworks celebrating the birth of our great nation. Fly your Star-Spangled Banners high! We all are anticipating a fun weekend at the 30th Annual WPA Golf Tournament & Scholarship Days July 19 and 20 at Quicksilver Golf Club in Midway, Pa. Seeing that Quicksilver is ranked the #1 public course in Pennsylvania, you shouldn't miss the opportunity to play. It's challenging but rewarding. And the barbeque afterwards is not to be missed. The fraternalism this weekend is truly one reason that I love being a member of WPA. Don't forget to attend the annual WPFA Scholarship Foundation meeting Friday, July 19 at 6:00 p.m. at the Pittsburgh Airport Marriott. Every dollar raised goes back to the youth of the Association in the form of annual scholarships for higher education. The following month, Branch 249 celebrates St. Stephen's Day on Aug. 25 at St. Stephen's Catholic Church with a meeting at noon and a delicious chicken paprikás dinner at 1:00 p.m. There is no charge for members, and guests pay only $8. See you there. There are tentative plans at St. Stephens Catholic Church for a summer social and pig roast Aug.18. More information next issue. Mark your calendars for Sept. 26 for the annual Branch 249 cabbage rolls sale. To date, we've sold more than 30,000 cabbage rolls! On a national level, mark your calendar for the WPA Picnic-A Great Fraternal Fest, Sept. 7 at Scenic View, a full day of all-you-can-eat Hungarian food, live music, dancing, raffles, activities and fishing. This is not to be missed as you can socialize with fellow Hungarians literally from all over the world. We send congratulations to all those celebrating birthdays and anniversaries, and we hope you have many more. We also extend our sincere sympathy to all who have recently lost a loved one. If you have questions concerning annuities, life insurance, IRA transfers or rollovers, please call Anne Marie and Mark Schmidt at 937-667- 1211 or Michelle Daley-LaFlame at 937-278-5970. Have a happy 4th and a great, safe July. Branch 296 Springdale, PA by Mary A. Kelly-Lovasz Summer is in full swing, and I hope you're taking full advantage of it. Besides knowing that July is the hub of the summer, did you know that it is also National Blueberry Month? July is also National Anti-Boredom Month (this is summer, people; if you're bored, it's your own fault!), as well as National Cell Phone Courtesy Month (which should actually be an everyday occurrence, but we know how that goes....). Independence Day is July 4, and if it's sweltering hot, it's also Sidewalk Egg-Fry Day. Teddy Bear Picnic Day (awwww) is July 10, and Cow Appreciation Day falls on July 15 (so hug a cow and maybe avoid eating a burger that day). William Penn Life 0 July 2013 0 21
