Ward by Joyce Nicholson Hello from the WPA branches from Barton, Martins Ferry, Weirton, Steubenville and Monaville! As we bid 2011 farewell, we are grateful for the opportunities given us to help others through the generosity of WPA: Join Hands Day events, Holiday Baskets, sponsorships of a youth travel baseball team, representation of our branches at over 11 area fund-raising auctions, Ohio Valley Hungarian-American picnics and social functions, branch outings at the Wheeling Thunderbirds hockey game, the Christmas party, assisting Jefferson County Red Cross and other programs It's been a hectic year, but it's been great fun in working to make WPA more well-known and recognized in our communities. We will It's been a mild winter in Northeast Ohio, and everyone (with the possible exception of skiers and snow boarders) is very happy. Branch meetings are in recess until March. The spring meetings will include discussions regarding a program to honor people in Branch 14 who have been members for more than 50 years. Branch 14 has participated in Join Hands Day for the last several years. The last two years, we have donated health-care equipment to the Hattie Larlham Foundation, a home for mentally and physically challenged adults and children. We will discuss where this year's donation will be allocated at the March meeting. As always, we at the branch are grateful for the Home Office's generous matching donation. Joan Altmayer, a long-time member, has been a model for many years, doing television commercials and fashion modeling. They were filmed in a home where Joan portrays a grandmother recovering from surgery performed at the Millard Fillmore Hospital. Natalie visits her grandmother at the home during her recovery. They color at the dining room table, Joan reads to Natalie on the couch, then they play the piano. They continued filming the next day. To ease Natalie's apprehension, the directors let her play with two dogs, and she fell in love with both of them. The commercial will air sometime next month. It will also be shown online. The next branch meeting will be held Wednesday, March 7, at 7:30 p.m., at the First Hungarian Reformed Church, 14530 Alexander Road, Walton Hills. All adult members are welcome to attend.
