For Starters dollars for scholars State fraternal alliances seeking applicants for grants PITTSBURGH - Young WPA mem­bers who are residents of either Cali­fornia, New England, New Jersey or New York may be eligible for scholar­ship grants being awarded by several state fraternal alliances California The California Fraternal Alliance (CFA) will be awarding a minimum of two $500 grants through its Ron Gill Scholarship program. The program is open to California residents who are full-time students entering their sophomore, junior or senior year at an accredited college, university or vocational/technical school. Applicants must also be a member, or child of a member, of a fraternal benefit society which holds membership in the CFA. In addition to the application, each applicant must submit an essay of 500 words or less explaining why they are deserving of the award. The CFA scholarship award is for one year only and winners will not be eligible for a second award. All win­ners will be notified by Oct. 1, 2012, and the awards will be made payable to both the student and their school. All application materials must be submitted by Sept. 1, 2012. New Jersey-New York The New Jersey-New York Frater­nal Alliance (NJNY FA) is offering its Youth Volunteer Award. The award is given to deserving young students from a member fraternal society, based on the student's volunteer achievements within their society as well as in the community at large. Each NJNY FA award winner will receive $500, and an additional $500 will be donated to the charity of their choice. The number of awards will be based on the proceeds from the NJNY FA Convention book. To qualify, the applicant must be a resident of New Jersey or New York, be a member of a fraternal society within the NJNY FA and be between the ages of 16 and 22 at the time of application. All applications must be post­marked by Sept. 1, 2012. The winner(s) will be announced at the 79th Annual NJNY FA Convention to be held in Atlantic City, N.J., on Oct. 4 and 5. New England The New England Fraternal Alli­ance (NEFA) will be awarding three $500 scholarships to students enter­ing their sophomore, junior or senior year in college or entering graduate school. One of the awards is named in memory of Pearl Plants, a loyal and tireless worker for the NEFA. Applicants for the NEFA awards must be full-time students, a resident of New England and a member (or child of a member) of a fraternal ben­efit society that holds a membership in the NEFA. Criteria to be used in judging includes overall merit, cumulative grade average, college activities and honors, community activities, finan­cial need and an essay. The deadline for submitting ap­plications for the NEFA scholarship is Sept. 15,2012. Recipients will be notified by Oct. 15.
