For Starters In Brief WPA Holiday Baskets Our members and branches have made WPA’s Holiday Basket program as much of a holiday tradition as roasted turkey and carol singing. We again invite all branches to join us in spreading the fraternal spirit this holiday season. Participating in this charitable program is easy. Branches prepare baskets, which include nonperishable food and other items donated by members. The Home Office donates $40 for each basket (up to three baskets per branch) to purchase additional items. Branch volunteers then deliver the baskets to families in need. Each year, more than 100 families experience a more joyous Thanksgiving or Christmas thanks in large branches through the Holiday Basket Exercise your rights: Participate in Sxs«. your branch’s election of officers day season, call our Home Office at I -800-848-7366. Welcome, Tar Heels! The Home Office recently announced that North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Wayne Goodwin has signed WPA’s license to conduct business in that state. With the addition of North Carolina, WPA is now licensed in 19 states and the District of Columbia. We look forward to spreading WPA’s fraternal spirit throughout the Tar Heel State. Flood relief donation While visiting Budapest last month during the WPA trip to Hungary, Endre Csornán, National Vice President-Fraternal (right), and Barbara A. House, Vice Chairman of the Board, hand-delivered funds raised via WPA's Flood Relief matching funds campaign. They presented a check for $6,600 to Gusztáv Fodor (left) and Sándor Pál of the Magyar Református Szeretetszolgálat (Hungarian Reformed Church Aid), an organization helping the victims of this June's flooding in northeastern Hungary and other Hungarians in need. Unfortunately, October's red sludge flood left many more Hungarians in desperate need of aid. For information on what WPA is doing to help, please see inside the front cover of this issue. PITTSBURGH — In the coming weeks, WPA members will have the chance to exercise one of the most important privileges of membership in the WPA: the right to vote for branch officers. We encourage all eligible members to not only vote in your branch election but also consider seeking a branch office. The procedure for conducting branch elections is spelled out in the WPA's By-Laws (Article VI, Sections 605 and 606). Put simply:- Candidates may be nomi, nated from a nominating committee appointed by I the branch president and also from the floor at the election meeting;- Each adult life-benefit member may vote once for each office; and- Elections shall be by a majority of those present at the election meeting. According to the Association's By- Laws, an "adult life-benefit member" is a person who has attained the age of 16 and has a life insurance certificate with the WPA. All such adult life benefit members are eligible to vote in branch elections. To run for a branch office, the Association's By-Laws state that a candidate must be an adult life-benefit member age 18 or older who is not: (1) directly involved in litigation against the WPA; (2) a full-time or general agent; (3) licensed to sell for another life insurance company; or (4) a spouse of any of the above. To find out when your branch will conduct its election of officers, check this month's "Branch News" section, or contact your branch officers. □ 2 ° November 2010 ° William Penn Life
