Branch News Malvene Heyz (L) and Julia Genes of Branch 226 McKeesport, Pa., present non-perishable food items purchased by the branch to National Vice President-Fraternal Endre Csornán. The donation was part of the WPA's recent Food Drive 2010. Branch 296 Springdale, PA by Patty Balia A branch meeting was held in May, and we will adjourn until September. At the May meeting, plans were made for our annual Christmas party. We will get into details at a later date. Congratulations on the new look of William Penn Life. The article about the University of Pittsburgh's Hungarian Room was very interesting. The information about the stained glass windows and their connection to the heritage of Hungarians was very enlightening to me. Thank you! The 27th Annual WPA Golf Tournament and Scholarship Days will be held July 16 and 17 at Chestnut Ridge Golf Resort and Conference Center in Blairsville, Pa. It's always a great time for all who attend. There is a busy schedule ahead for you golfers. If you haven't registered yet, there's a form you can complete and return on Page 28 of this issue. If by chance you are not golfing and have some time, you may want to visit some of the historic places nearby. Just to name a few: Blairsville and Saltsburg Borough-A Pennsylvania Canal Town are on the Preserve America Community List. The historic preservation projects there include researching and restoring canal era sites. Another site worth visiting is the Underground History Center, located at 214 South East Lane, Blairsville. It is housed in the former Second Baptist Church which served as a stop along the Underground Railroad. From 1829 to 1865, Saltsburg was an important stop along the Pennsylvania Main Line Canal for transportation of goods and passengers. In 1855, the Northwestern Pennsylvania Railroad opens a station in Saltsburg and eventually replaced the canal as the main means of transport. There are also antique shops and flea markets too many to mention. So, enjoy the historic area before you golf. Go a day earlier or stay a day later. Have a great golf weekend in historic Pennsylvania. Belated birthday wishes to Jimmy Charles. May you be blessed and have joy. Branch 352 Coraopolis, PA by Dora McKinsey What a wonderful time everyone had at Scenic View in Rockwood, Pa., where we gathered for Join Hands Day 2010 on Saturday, May 22, but, boy, was it WET! It rained off and on (mostly on) the entire day, but everyone pitched in and did a fantastic job landscaping the grounds at Scenic View. Many shrubs and perennials were planted around the flagpole, at the entrance and around the Lakeside Lodge. Many thanks to all who participated. A special thank you to Donna Varga and Marguerite McNelis who started weeding and planting at 7:30 a.m. and didn't stop until the job was done (all the while working in the rain). Donna did a professional job in picking out the plants and shrubs and placing them around Scenic View. Many thanks to the following branches who provided funds to purchase the greenery: Branch 8 Johnstown, Pa.; Branch 26 Sharon, Pa.; Branch 34 Pittsburgh, Pa.; Branch 48 New York; Branch 71 Duquesne, Pa.; Branch 88 Rural Valley, Pa.; Branch 89 Homestead, Pa.; Branch 226 McKeesport, Pa.; Branch 296 Springdale, Pa.; and Branch 352 Coraopolis, Pa. Also, thanks to Ruth Toth for her personal donation. We also had Boy Scout and Cub Scout troops from Munhall, Pa., participate in planting. Of course, the boys didn't mind being wet! Happy birthday to all Branch 352 members celebrating their special day. We wish you many more.
