Branch News Teresa Toth of Branch 40 Martins Ferry, Ohio, (R) and Joyce Nicholson (L) present donations of home-baked cookies and fresh fruit to representatives of the Rosewood Manor Nursing Home in Yorkville, Ohio, as part of the branch’s Join Hands Day project. Branch 10 Barton, OH Branch 40 Martins Ferry, OH Branch 248 Monaville, WV Branch 349 Weirton, WV Branch 8164 Steubenville, OH by Joyce Nicholson Hello from the WPA branches from Barton, Martins Ferry, Weirton, Steubenville and Monaville! Several of our branches got together to participate in Join Hands Day on May 1. Our project from Branch 40 Martins Ferry, Ohio, was to visit with residents in Rosewood Manor Nursing Home in Yorkville, Ohio. Our volunteers had an evening of fun baking cookies together to give to the residents for snacks. We also took a fresh fruit basket when we visited Rosewood Manor. They were so happy to have visitors bringing good food and conversation. In the picture (left to right) are Joyce Nicholson offering the fruit basket to the nutritionist of the nursing home, while a nurse accepts the home-baked cookies from Teresa Toth. We will highlight another of our projects next month. At our last meeting, we discussed having an event for branch members at a Washington Wild Things baseball game with a tailgate party prior to the game. All branch members are invited to attend, but the seating is limited. Additional information with dates and times will follow in next month's edition of William Penn Life, so check back! Branch 14 Cleveland, OH by Dawn D. Ward While summer meetings are in recess, the branch continues to provide ample opportunities for fun and fellowship. As we go to press, members will have already enjoyed an outing to "Hungarian Night" at the Lake Erie Captains minor league baseball game in Eastlake. On the weekend of July 16, many of our branch members will compete in the annual WPA Golf Tournament in Blairsville, Pa. Another opportunity this summer is the Hungarian Heritage Experience, held Aug. 1 to 7 at Scenic View. Members will learn the Hungarian language, enjoy homemade Hungarian food and practice Hungarian traditions. The Experience is fully booked for this year, but you can still contact the Home Office at 1-800-848-7366, ext. 136, for details on how you can sign up for next year's event. Branch member Frances Pickett is also providing a local venue for people interested in learning the Hungarian language. Learning the language has been a lifetime passion for Fran. She has studied and taken classes to learn the language at Lakeland Community College, John Carroll University and Debrecen summer school in Hungary. She also attended the Hungarian Heritage Experience at Scenic View. She has organized a weekly Hungarian study group at a local Barnes and Noble cafe on Chagrin Boulevard which meets at 10:00 a.m. Tuesdays. These meetings provide an opportunity to discuss vocabulary and grammar and provide direction and encouragement regardless of an individuals level of proficiency in the language. This is a fine example of how our members are actively promoting our shared Hungarian culture. For additional information, contact Frances Pickett at 440-232- 2473. Juvenile members of the branch continue to succeed both academically and athletically. Járod, Jason and James Bronstrup of Brecksville, Ohio, ages 12,11, and 7, respectively, have finished a successful wrestling season for the Brecksville Bees. Járod and Jason both placed in the trophy category at the state meet in Dayton, Ohio. James also won or placed in many novice tournaments. Jason and Jarod's city baseball team won the Brecksville/Independence league championship in the summer of 2009. The three boys are also doing very well academically. They are fifth-generation William Penn members. Their great-great grandparents, Mary and Andrew Tokár, were charter members of the Hungarian Reformed Church in Fairport Harbor, Ohio. Their greatgrandfather John, grandmother Rosemary Vitale and mother Laura Bronstrup comprise the William Penn lineage. Rosemary and Steve Vitale take their grandsons to the WPA children's Christmas party, and the Bronstrup brothers represent a bright light for the future of the William Penn Association.
