Toth (Photos by Justin McKinsey) SCENIC VIEW — On May 22, members from WPA branches across southwestern Pennsylvania and the New York area, along with about 20 cub scouts and boy scouts and their pack leaders and parents, converged on Scenic View to participate in a Join Hands Day project. Despite a lot of rain, the volunteers spent the day planting bushes, plants and flowers and laying mulch, helping to beautify the grounds of the WPA's facility in the Laurel Highlands. After all the day's tasks were completed -including a lot of clean up — all the volunteers enjoyed a great lunch of pizza, chicken, chicken paprikas, mashed potatoes, green beans, dumplings and pastries. The scouts, representing Pack 15 from the Steel Valley area, also cleaned up after lunch, putting away all the tables and chairs. When all the day's work was done, some of the scouts played ball while others went for a hike or fished in the lake. About 35 adult volunteers then met in the Lakeside Lodge to discuss plans for the upcoming WPA Picnic-A Great Fraternal Fest to be held Sept. 11. If you have not attended one of our picnics, you have no idea what you're missing. A big "thank you" goes to everyone who helped make this day a success: the volunteers who assisted with the planting and clean up; those who attended the picnic meeting; the cooks for preparing a fantastic lunch; and the scouts from Pack 15, their pack leaders and parents. We thank the following branches who participated in our Join Hands Day event: Branch 8 Johnstown, Pa.; Branch 26 Sharon, Pa.; Branch 34 Pittsburgh, Pa.; Branch 48 New York, N.Y.; Branch 71 Duquesne, Pa.; Branch 88 Rural Valley, Pa.; Branch 89 Homestead, Pa.; Branch 226 McKeesport, Pa.; Branch 296 Springdale, Pa.; and Branch 352 Coraopolis, Pa. Our biggest thanks go to Donna Varga, Ken Milcarzyk and National Vice President- Fraternal Endre Csornán. This was truly a great fraternal event. John S. Toth is President of Branch 89 Homestead, Pa.
