ON JUNE 14, fraternalists across America will celebrate Flag Day by participating in the 23rd annual National Pause for the Pledge of Allegiance. Flag Day honors the adoption of the Stars and Stripes as our national flag by the Second Continental Congress on June 14,1777. The new flag symbolized the new nation, the United States of America. The Stars and Stripes first flew in a Flag Day celebration in Hartford, Conn., in 1861, the first summer of the Civil War. The first national observance of Flag Day came on June 14, 1877, the centennial of the original flag resolution. In the decades that followed, many people pressed to have Flag Day observed regularly. PITTSBURGH — As this issue went to press, only four openings remained available for the WPA's Hungarian Heritage Experience to be held Aug. 6 to 12 at Penn Scenic View, Rockwood, Pa. Anyone interested in participating in this program is asked to complete and return the reservation form found below as soon as possible. One individual who waged a lifelong crusade for a national Flag Day observance was Bernard J. Cigrand. As a teacher in the Stony Hill School near Waubeka, Wise., he kept on his desk mounted in a bottle, a 38-star flag, 10 inches high. At the close of school in 1885, Cigrand observed a first Flag Birthday with his pupils. The concept of the Pause for the Pledge of Allegiance is for all Americans everywhere to pause for a moment on June 14, Flag Day, at 7:00 p.m. EDT to say simultaneously the 31 words of the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag. This simple ceremony is recognized by Congress as part of National Flag Day ceremonies. The William Penn Association proudly endorses the celebration and invites all to participate. Any adult life benefit member interested in learning the Hungarian language or in indulging in the food, culture and traditions of Hungary— without the expense of a trip to Hungary-is welcome to attend.
