Branch 51 Passaic, NJ by Christine K. Baldyga On March 15, Hungarian Independence Day was celebrated. Local Hungarians celebrated with a flagraising ceremony at the Clifton City Hall. All present sang the American and Hungarian national anthems. Among those attending this ceremony was the Rev. Stephen Mustos, pastor of St. Stephen's Magyar Roman Catholic Church, Passaic. On May 13, officers of Branch 51 attended the 43rd Annual Carousel Ball for the benefit of the American Hungarian Foundation, located in New Brunswick, N.J. We were joined by branch officers from other local New Jersey branches and by members of the WPA's Official Family. An enjoyable evening was had by all. The AHF, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, is respected worldwide for sponsoring a unique and dynamic presentation of the Hungarian cultural and historical heritage. During the ball, Don Shula, the winningest head coach in NFL history, was presented with the Abraham Lincoln Award. David B. Crabiel, freeholder director for the Middlesex County Board of Chosen Freeholders, and Eva M. Nagy, president of the Board of Education of Franklin Township, were both presented with the Distinguished Service Award. Congratulations and best wishes to them all. We hope that everyone had an enjoyable summer. The children are headed back to school. Congratulations to recent graduates Jamie Rubin and Steven Rubin. Jamie will be attending Villanova University, and Steven will be attending Wayne Hills High School. Branch member Michael Mozer graduated from Dartmouth University last year and has been working in New York City for Duetsche Bank. Michael wants you all to know that he is grateful to the William Penn Fraternal Association Scholarship Foundation for the scholarship grants awarded to him while attending college. Branch 129 Columbus, OH by Árpád Sibrik Congratulations to the WPA for hosting another successful golf tournament and to all the winners. Special recognition goes to Branch 129 member Bill Woods who won the senior men's low gross title and to fellow branch member Dolores Horvath who won the senior women's low gross title and longest drive. Everyone had a great time despite the wet conditions. Congratulations to the Hungarian Reformed Church of Columbus on celebrating their 100th anniversary. The church marked the occasion with a beautiful service co-celebrated by numerous Hungarian ministers. The Rt. Rev. Kalman Ludwig delivered the sermon. After the service a banquet was held at the Oakhurst Country Club, attended by guests from near and far. Many organizations presented Rev. Otvos with gifts for the church. Our condolences to Rose Warga on the death of her 54-year-old daughter. We wish Piri Sibrik a speedy recovery from her cornea transplant. Several high school graduates from our branch are starting college, including our grandson, Matthew Isabel, who is attending The Ohio State University. Good luck to you, Matt! Our next branch meeting will be held on Sept. 13 at 7:00 p.m. at 365 Woodrow Ave., Columbus. All are welcome to attend. Branch 132 ^ South Bend, IN by Anna Horvath Branch 132 held its annual picnic on Sunday, July 30, at Ptowatomi Park in South Bend. The park is located in a wooded area, which was a good thing that day. The shade—not to mention a welcome breeze—helped to make the 90+ degree temperatures tolerable. A good time was had by all. The food was great as was the chance to enjoy the company of friends. Each person brought a dish to be shared with others. The branch supplied the soft drinks, water, chicken, sausage, hot dogs and paper products. Many thanks to all who came and enjoyed the picnic with us. Our special thanks go out to all those who helped before, during and after the picnic, especially Bob and Marilyn Horvath. Our next monthly meeting will be held Tuesday, Sept. 19. Please join us. For more information call, Branch President Anna Horvath at 574-232- 7451. 16 William Penn Life, September 2006
