1 Branch News Branch 14 Cleveland, OH (EDITOR’S NOTE: Last month's article from Branch 14 was mistakenly printed under the wrong heading. For those members who missed the article because of that error, we’ve included information from that article in this month’s article.) by Dawn D. Ward Branch 14 hosted its annual children's Christmas party Dec. 11. Around 300 people attended, including 120 children. Membership Activities Manager Endre Csornán and his lovely wife Arlene came from Pittsburgh to attend the party. "These children will never forget the generosity of William Penn and the great time they experienced at the party," Mr. Csornán said. Thanhs to all Branch 14 officers and members who volunteered their time and efforts at the party. One of the youngest members at the party was one- month-old Alexis Bertemes, who is a fifth-generation WPA member, as are her brother, Tyler and cousin, Cullen Zond who also attended the party. Their greatgrandmother, Katherine Klarr, relayed fond memories of her father, Frank Mikula, who was a WPA branch manager in Barton, Ohio (formerly Branch 40). Membership in the WPA provides an opportunity to continue the Hungarian lineage and traditions started over a century ago by our ancestors. Its benefits are also available to anyone with no ancestral ties to the organization, just a desire for great insurance products and fun social events! Luck has certainly been a "lady" to Branch 14 member David Martinis who won the 50/50 raffle for the WPA scholarship fund at the Christmas party. David very generously donated a portion of his winnings back to the scholarship fund. Jeff and I were pleased to attend the 51st Annual Hungarian Association Ball Nov. 26 in Cleveland, where Branch 18 officers for 2006 are (l-r): Elsie Kantor, auditor; Doug Truesdell, auditor; Carol Truesdell, treasurer; Helen Molnár, vice president; Tom House, auditor; Barbara House, president; Rose Antal, secretary; and Ernie Mayoros, alternate auditor. WPA member Dr. Julius Nadas was honored for celebrating his 100th birthday that weekend. Dr. Nadas was very active in Branch 45 (now part of Branch 14) as a delegate and branch president. Dr. Nadas and his family, including his deceased siblings John and Rose, have dedicated their lives to the preservation of the Hungarian heritage, and we are proud to have them as members. Congratulations to Branch 14 member Andrew Horvath of Geneva, Ohio, who is currently ranked first in his class of 261 students at Geneva High School. Andrew carries a 4.087 GPA and is a member of the National Honor Society. He is equally formidable in athletics, earning a varsity letter in track, two in wrestling and three in football. He is a member of the All-County and All-Conference first teams in football and was named 2005 Offensive Lineman of the Year. The VFW nominated him for State Athlete of the Year. This outstanding young man also spends countless hours volunteering at his church and for numerous charities in Ashtabula County. He truly exemplifies the fraternal spirit. Andrew is the son of Brett and Roberta Horvath, and the grandson of Anne Horvath. We are proud of our juvenile members and would appreciate hearing about their accomplishments.
