63rd Annual Bowling Tournament Winning Weekend 63rd Annual Bowling Tournament gets WPA’s summer off to successful start PITTSBURGH - The WPA kicked off it's annual slate of summer fraternal activities a little earlier this year when it hosted its 63rd Annual Bowling Tournament May 5 to 7. The weekend opened with the annual meeting of the William Penn Fraternal Association Scholarship Foundation. During the meeting, more than $9,500 was raised for the Foundation. The weekend's other activities raised another $6,500. After the meeting, bowlers and guests gathered for the bowlers reception in the courtyard of the Radisson Hotel Pittsburgh Green Tree. Everyone enjoyed the delicious barbecue while getting reacquainted with old friends. The highlight of the evening was a Chinese auction featuring dozens of prize packages. The auction offered something to please every age and taste and raised more than $2,000 for the scholarship fund. The bowling events began in earnest on Saturday morning at Princess Lanes with the team event and Juvenile Fun Event. Before play began, five WPA member-bowlers were given the chance to win some extra money in the "First Frame Contest." Each of the five rolled one ball and were awarded $10 for each pin they knocked down. A strike would win $200. Of the five, only one bowler-Helen Molnar-rolled a strike and won $200. The other four participants were Rick Ford ($30), Dale Strom ($70), Rodney L. Bones III ($80) and Jimmy Lewis ($60). No one claimed the weekend's big prize, $10,000 for bowling a perfect game during the team event. But, many bowlers did earn cash prizes for their strong play (see list of winners on Pages 10 and 11), while several others won cash in the Lucky Strike contest (see story Page 14). The list of the weekend's winners grew on Saturday night during the annual bowling awards banquet. Nine people won prizes in the annual benefit raffle for the Scholarship Foundation, including Caroline Varner ($400 cash), the Verhovay Home Association (an Ipod Nano), Alison Healy (Fuji digital camera), Betty Vargo (RCA portable DVD player), George Batyko ($100 Sunoco gas card), Joe Chobody (13-inch color TV), Geza Nameth (Sylvania VCR/ DVD player), Michael Oberg ($25 cash) and Georgiáimé Gonzales (bowling ball and bag). Weekend raises $16,021 for scholarship fund PITTSBURGH - Thanks to the generosity of our members and friends, a total of $16,021 was raised during this year's annual bowling tournament and scholarship days. Most of that total ($9,505) was raised during the annual meeting of the William Penn Fraternal Association Scholarship Foundation held May 5 at the Radisson Hotel Pittsburgh Green Tree. The benefit raffle drawn during Saturday's bowling awards dinner raised $1,690. Another $1,325 was collected through the lane sponsorship program (see list Page 14). The Chinese auction, held during Friday's bowlers reception, raised $2,004 for the scholarship foundation. The special X-Box 360 raffle raised $582 and the sale of the new WPA cookbook raised $915. Our thanks to one and all for their generosity and support. 6 William Penn Life, June 2006
