Branching Out with Endre Csornán 119 Years of Fraternalism SOME 30 YEARS AFTER LOUIS Kossuth's visit to the United States, the establishment of a chain of small Hungarian coal mining settlements in east central Pennsylvania began when group after group of immigrant miners moved into the Hazleton area by the invitation of various mining companies. In those days, the mining companies sent out special agents to recruit foreign workers who had very modest demands for wages and who were willing to work day and night under the earth. Not knowing the English language and being unfamiliar with the industrial work, the newcomers suffered many accidents and deaths. Those who were disabled in mining accidents could expect help from no one. It was 119 years ago when a handful of Hungarian coal miner immigrants grasped each others' hands and said: "We need protection...insurance. We must join hands; we must unite." On Feb. 21, 1886, the Verhovay Aid Association was organized in Hazleton, Pa., by 28 coal miners. It was chartered by the state of Pennsylvania nine months later on Nov. 29, 1886. Six generations later we still feel the warmth of that honest and sincere grip with which the founders of our Association grasped each others' hands to face the harsh life with a united strength. The long history of our Association is a tribute to the foresight and wisdom of our founders and the ability and integrity of the past and present officers and Board members who have conducted the WPA's affairs throughout the many years. We hope and pray that the Association will continue to serve our members and others for years to come. Happy Anniversary, William Penn Association. 119 év a jótékonyság mezején.
