PITTBSURGH - The National Fraternal Congress of America (NFCA) announced that its membersocieties have provided more than $14 million in materials and cash relief to the Hurricane Katrina relief efforts. The William Penn Association, a longtime member of the NFCA, has joined this effort in response to the overwhelming destruction on the Gulf Coast. We are asking our members to make contributions to the WPA Foundation, which will be earmarked for the relief effort. NFCA Immediate Past Chair of the Board Michael Stivoric sent a letter of appeal to all NFCA member-societies and state fraternal congresses, asking them to give generously to the dozens of organizations that are providing assistance and relief to the folks who need it most. The response has been terrific. "Once again, fraternal benefit societies did not disappoint," said NFCA President and CEO Frederick H. Grubbe. "Since the late 19th Century, member-societies of the NFCA have provided immediate relief, in times of crisis, to their individual members, their local communities and their country. Never has their role been more immediate-or visible-- than their collective response to the devastation As Hungarians around the world get set to mark the anniversary of the Hungarian Revolution of 1956, producers are entering the final stages of production on a documentary film about the revolt and its significant international consequences. "Torn from the Flag" is a featurelength film being produced to mark the revolution's 50th anniversary in 2006. According to Klaudia Kovács, the film's producer, what sets this of Hurricane Katrina." Senator Rick Santorum (R-PA) recognized the relief efforts of the fraternal benefit system in his remarks to the Senate Finance Committee today. "We have seen that within 48 hours of Katrina, the nation's fraternal benefit societies were feeding, housing, providing supplies, clothes, toiletries, cash and beds to those in need in shelters both in Houston and in New Orleans. During the first week of this effort, fratemals already had expended upwards of $14 million on hurricane relief, a sum which is expected to increase as these efforts broaden," said Senator Santorum. Literally hundreds of relief responses are ongoing and will not be fully recognized for weeks or months from now, as fraternal first-responders go about the very work their charters authorize. The NFCA has created an opportunity for society headquarters to report any contributions to the relief cause. A running tally will be posted on the NFCA Web site, www.nfcanet.org, where updates will be posted as they are received. The WPA encourages all its members and friends to join us in this vital fraternal effort. Please send your contributions, made payable to "William Penn Association Foundation," to: WPA Foundation, 709 Brighton Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15233. effort apart is that it examines the revolution from the point of view of non-Hungarians who either came to Hungary to join the uprising or witnessed it change not only Hungary but also their own land. "We feel that this unusual approach will lend more credibility to our chronicle and prove instrumental in elevating the Hungarian revolution to its rightful place of honor in world history," Kovács said.
