22nd Annual Golf Tournament A weekend of firsts Hole-in-one, scramble format highlight 22nd golf tournament RICHMOND, OH - The WPA's 22nd Annual Golf Tournament produced two exciting first-time situations. This year's tournament marked the first time WPA golfers played in a scramble/best-shot format. But, the day's most exciting event happened at hole #5 where Greg Fessler of Harrisburg, Pa., scored a hole-in-one, becoming the first golfer in a WPA tournament to win a holein-one prize. The prize for Greg's ace: a cool $2,500. Clear blue skies greeted our golfers on July 23 as they approached the first tee at the Blackmoor Golf Club in Richmond, Ohio. The weather remained nearly perfect the rest of the day as golfers made their way around the often challenging course. When all was said and done, first prize was awarded to the foursome of Dan Deabner, Jerry Langan and Tony Kaminski, all members of Branch 89 Homestead, Pa., and Ron Blatt. The group's round of 12-under par was good enough to win them $400. (For a complete list of winners, see the Leader Board on Page 9.) They were among 108 golfers who participated in this year's tournament. Of course, none was happier than Greg Fessler. In addition to his holein-one prize, he also won a football jersey autographed by Pittsburgh Steelers Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. The jersey was one of two awarded in a special raffle drawn at Saturday's golf awards banquet at the Mountaineer Race Track and Gaming Resort. The other jersey, autographed by Steelers Wide Receiver Hines Ward, was won by Carl Horvath. The football jersey drawing was one of many additional activities which added even more fun and excitement to the weekend. The weekend began with the annual golfers reception at the The winning foursome in the scramble/best-ball format was the team of (l-r) Dan Deabner, Tony Kaminski, Jerry Langan and Ron Blatt.. Mountaineer Resort. The reception opened the weekend in fine style, offering plenty of tasty free food and beverages, the always fun Chinese auction, as well as the annual putting contest. A special putting contest offered a $1,000 prize to the participant who could sink a 30-foot putt on a green set up in the resort's ballroom. The names of 10 members were drawn and each was given one chance to sink the putt. None did, so three additional members' names were drawn as alternates and given a shot at the big prize. None of the alternates sank the putt either. In the past, that meant no one won a prize. But, in another "first" at this year's tournament, the WPA awarded cash prizes to three of the 13 participants in a random drawing. Yvonne Mayor won $100; Richard Schneck, $75; and Julie Bernaski, $50. The fun and fraternalism continued the next day at the golf course and well into Saturday evening when the annual golf awards dinner was held. In still another first, the dinner was held outdoors at the resort's courtyard. The weather, again, was 8 William Penn Life, August 2005 Winners of the skill shot contests and the tournament coadministrators join hole-in-one winner Greg Fessler (front with sign) at the golf awards dinner.
