Branch News Branch 14 Cleveland, OH by Dawn D. Ward The Branch 14 children's Christmas party held Sunday, Dec. 12 was a tremendous success. About 250 people attended including over 100 Branch 14 juvenile members at this wonderful annual event. Santa Claus (who bore a striking resemblance to Branch 14 member Richard Jacob) was there all afternoon. Two clowns entertained the children with face painting and making various balloon figures. It was a pleasure to have Membership Activities Manager Endre Csornán and his lovely wife Arlene join us from Pittsburgh. The 2005 Christmas party will be held Dec. 11. Branch 14 sadly reports the passing of member Richard Day, 62, of Grant Pass, Oregon, who passed away Sept. 8 in an automobile accident. Richard was originally from Cleveland, and he, his wife Susan, and son Brian moved to Oregon. His daughter Michelle Day of Eastlake had a memorial service for her father Dec. 11 at the American Legion Hall in Willowick at which he was eulogized by Jeff Ward. Congratulations to Branch 14 member Joe Volter who was elected 2004 Volunteer of the Year at Edgewater Yacht Club. During the year Joe volunteered his time, talent, and boat for many functions including One Design racing, Junior sail races, and North Coast Women's races every Tuesday night during the summer months along with weekend club regattas. Joe had over 230 volunteer hours for 2004 and says 2005 will be another busy year. Joe thanks his wife Virginia, Branch 14 auditor, for her support. Any golfer will appreciate how difficult it is to attain a hole-in-one. But how many people can boast of nailing their first ace when they are age 80 and 87 respectively? Branch 14 members and octogenarians Allyn and Mary McNaughton of Chardon, Ohio each got a hole-in-one on the same hole at Pepperidge Tree Golf Course in Madison, Ohio. Allyn got his ace in the fall of 2003 at age 87 and Mary shot her hole-in-one at age 80 while playing with her husband five years prior. Congratulations! Branch 14 scholarship recipients Peter and Sydney Sustarsic are pursuing degrees in music and theatre at Kent State University. Peter is a graduate student in music performance as a percussionist. In April 2004 he was featured in a joint recital and also played in the Kent State Jazz Ensemble. Sydney is a 2004 graduate of Medina High School and was crowned prom queen. She is a freshman at Kent State University majoring in theatre. She also received a drama scholarship. Please contact Jeff or Dawn Ward at 440-838-1200 with any news about Branch 14 scholarship recipients. We love to report on their progress. Scott DeVeny, a member of Branch 14—along with his wife Shawn, son Scott and daughter Alexis, mother JeanSombaty, and grandmother Catherine Bilica-informed me that his brother John is proudly serving our country in Afghanistan. Members are encouraged to write John at: John M. DeVeny 707th O.D. Company (EOD) Bagram Airfield APO AE 09354 I'm certain John will appreciate your kind words and support. The regular Branch 14 meetings will be held the first Wednesday of March, April, September and December 2005. All members are welcome to attend to help plan the year's activities. The next meeting will be held Wednesday, March 2, at 7:30 p.m., at the First Hungarian Reformed Church Bethlen Hall, 14530 Alexander Road, Walton Hills, Ohio. Branch 18 Lincoln Park, MI by Barbara A. House Hope everyone had a wonderful Holy Day season. We wish you a happy, healthy, prosperous and fraternal new year. I want to wish Grace Balaythy a very happy 90th birthday. I know it is very hard to believe. There is no one in the world that can keep up with Grace. She is one of a kind. I don't know what many of us would do without her. We love you, Grace.
