making plain kalács about 20 inches in diameter, six or seven inches high. Then came the diós and mákos kalács (poppy and walnut roll). We had a whole ham, a few pairs of kolbász, sárga túró (yellow milk cheese) the size of a large cantaloupe, decorated hard boiled eggs, and a small bottle of water for a blessing. This was all placed in a large wicker basket, and was covered with the most beautiful handmade cover. The lady of the house carried it with her family through town to be blessed in church for the noon day feast. As many know, this holiday lasted three days. We had to attend church Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. The third day was öntözködés. The boys of the town would visit their favorite girlfriend and sprinkle them with cologne (szagos viz). The boys were asked to come in and were offered refreshments. (Here I thought I have nothing to write about this month!) On Feb. 13 we had our first meeting of the year. It was nice to see everyone. We discussed the upcoming Carousel Ball. It is being held on May 1 and is usually a lovely affair. Speaking of Balls, on Feb. 21 we attended The Reménység Bal held at the Hanover Marriott in New Jersey. The Rev. Stephen Mustos of St. Stephen's R.C. Magyar Church in Passaic, N.J., was honored for his outstanding work in the Hungarian community. The proceeds of this ball will go to a Hungarian Teachers College in Berekszas-Ukrajna. This is near and dear to us. (Remember the flood in 1998, Ukrajna) The ball was a great success, and we had a chance to see many of our friends. The next day we enjoyed Mass at a nearby Roman Catholic church. You could tell by the Mass attendance and size of the church that religion here is alive and well. With the cold winter, we did have some heat in February. A 10-family apartment house burned down, with 30 people losing everything. Our family joined in helping these devastated families. Art Barillo helped sort donations of winter clothing and household items. I Branch News Branch 51 President Art Barillo helps a fellow volunteer sort through donated clothing. The clothing will be given to the members of 10 families who lost their homes during a recent apartment building fire. Now for some business. If any members have questions about WPA Branch 51, you may contact Art Barillo at 856-678-8987. Branch 226 McKeesport, PA by Goldie J. Szarka Kellemes Húsvéti Ünnepeket Kívánunk. We wish you a Happy Easter holiday. By the time you read this, we will be in daylight savings time, thank goodness. The days will be longer for us to enjoy. I heard from WPA members living in Magyar Park—practically next door to Penn Scenic View—that the snow is finally melting there. So, we should be looking forward to a great spring and summer. Please don't forget to mark your calendars for our wonderful annual picnic on Sept. 11. It always produces so much fun and laughter. Sincere and heartfelt condolences are sent out to the Biro/Sheedy families on the loss of WPA member Elizabeth (Honey) Tolone who passed away last month at the age of 78. May she rest in eternal peace. Last month my husband presented a beautiful Hungarian flag to the Free Hungarian Reformed Church of McKeesport that he had brought back with him the last time he visited Hungary. A dedication ceremony was held at the church, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Daniel Borsay. The children's choir performed, and Judit Borsay recited a Hungarian poem. Afterwards, everyone was invited to the church hall for a delicious dinner. It was truly a delightful Sunday. The annual Spring Dance at the McKeesport Hungarian Social Club will be held Saturday, April 17. Come on down and csárdás! Greetings and good wishes for the best life can offer to all your April birthday celebrants (especially Endre Csornán—Boldog Születés Napot Kívánunk).
