I In Memóriám MICHAEL J.HRAB AR Former Chairman of the Board WOODBRIDGE, NJ - The entire Association was saddened by the recent death of former Chairman of the Board Michael J. Hrabar. Mr. Hrabar, 77, passed away Dec. 20, 2003, at home. His death brought to an end a long career of distinguished service to the William Penn Association on both the branch and national levels. He was a true fraternalist, not only serving his fellow WPA members but also dedicating much time and effort to promoting his Hungarian heritage and serving in his community. Mr. Hrabar was a member and leader for many years of Branch 16 Perth Amboy, N.J. He represented the interest of his fellow branch members as a delegate to the General Convention in 1963 and 1967. In 1971, he was elected to the first of four consecutive terms as a member of the National Auditing Committee. In 1987, after serving for 16 years as an auditor, he was elected to the first of three consecutive terms on the WPA Board of Directors. In 1995, he was elected Chairman of the Board, serving in that position until June 1999. Mr. Hrabar was born in Perth Amboy and resided in the Avenel section of Woodbridge for the past 55 years. An army veteran of World War II, he was employed as a supervisor in the sewage treatment and building grounds departments of Woodbridge Township, where he worked for 34 years before retiring in 1989. He was named Woodbridge Township Hungarian of the Year in 1994 and received the American Hungarian Foundation's Distinguished Service Award in 1996. He held numerous elected and appointed public offices, including five terms as the fire commissioner for Avenel Fire District 5. He was a member and past president of the Woodbridge Board of Education and a member of the township's zoning board. He also was a former manager of the Woodbridge Babe Ruth League. Mr. Hrabar was an active member of St. Nicholas Byzantine Catholic Church in Perth Amboy, a member of the St. Andrews Knights of Columbus Council 5088 and the John J. Griffin Fourth Degree Assembly. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Anna; two daughters, Michaelene Mirkovich of Port Reading, N.J., and Annette David of Spotswood, N.J.; two sisters, Eleanor Peoples of Tennessee and Mary Szucs of Perth Amboy; and five granddaughters, Melissa, Meagan and Monica Mirkovich, and Danielle and Dayna David. A funeral Mass was celebrated Dec. 23 at St. Nicholas Byzantine Catholic Church. Interment was in the church cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the William Penn Fraternal Association Scholarship Foundation. Rest in peace, Uncle Mike.
