For Starters Members’ generosity helped make Christmas brighter for 600 children PITTSBURGH -- True to their fraternal nature, our members and branches once again helped make this past Christmas a little brighter for children living in crises around the world. How did they do it? Simply by filling old shoe boxes with toys, treats and everyday items we take for granted but which mean everything to a child who has little. This caring and sharing was all part of the WPA's Operation Christmas Child 2003 campaign. Thanks to the generosity and fraternal spirit of our members, branches and friends, the WPA collected 600 gifted-filled shoe boxes, along with $2,190 to cover the expenses of delivering the boxes to those in need and to fill additional boxes. The Home Office delivered the shoe boxes to the Operation Christmas Child distribution center, located at the Northway Christian Community Center in Wexford, Pa. From there, your donations were sent to the OCC headquarters in North Carolina, where the shoe boxes were prepared for delivery to children in 70 countries. Of the millions of boxes processed last year, more than 110,000 were sent to needy children in Hungary. In the five years the WPA has conducted the OCC campaign, we have collected a total of 3,069 shoe boxes and $16,080. We thank the many members, branches and friends of the WPA who contributed to last year's campaign. Your generosity has truly made a difference.
