Highlights from Harrisburg The new and familiar share spotlight at annual golf tourney ____________21st Annual Golf Tournament____________ HARRISBURG, PA - The more things change, the more things stay the same...at least when it comes to the WPA's Annual Golf Tournament. The changes noticed at this year's tournament lay on the men's side of the leader board. Ronald Oravitz shot a 74 to capture his first men's low gross title in the ages 18 to 59 category. He was joined by first-time winner Robert Hippensteel of Branch 336 Harrisburg, Pa., who won the men's low gross title for those aged 60 and older by shooting a 75. Meanwhile, on the women's side of the leader board, things seemed to stay the same. Betsy Griffith of Branch 98 Bethlehem, Pa., shot a 94 to win her fourth consecutive women's low gross title for those aged 18 to 59. In tire seniors category, Dolores Horvath of Branch 129 Columbus, Ohio, shot a 97 to win her third straight title in that category. (For a complete list of winners, see the Leader Board on Page 9.) They were among 88 golfers who enjoyed a sunny, warm—and sometimes windy-day July 24 at the Dauphin Highlands Golf Course in Harrisburg. The weather the day of the tournament seemed like a gift from the heavens, considering the heavy rains the area sustained in the days prior to the tournament. Luckily, the rain ended late Friday, just in time for golfers to enjoy all the activities associated with that evening's golfers reception at the Harrisburg East Holiday Inn. The reception opened the weekend in fine style, offering plenty of tasty free food and beverages, the always fun Chinese auction, as well as the annual putting and pitching contests. The fun and fraternalism continued the next day at the golf course and well into Saturday evening when the annual golf awards dinner was held. The weekend's activities allowed both golfers and non-golfers alike to Golf Tournament Co-Administrators Charles S. Johns (left) and Elmer W. Toth (right) congratulate Branch 89 member Joseph Hanchak of Marshalltown, Iowa, on winning the auction raffle. Joe took home a new set of Taylor Made golf clubs and bag. go home winners. Among Saturday evening's activities were the "Fraternal Prize Drawing" during which two members in attendance were each awarded a $2,000 paid-up WPA life insurance policy. The lucky prize winners were Marguerite Beke of Branch 13 Trenton, N.J., andAaron Davenport of Branch 26 Sharon, Pa.The weekend's biggest prize—a new set of Taylor Made golf clubs and bag—given to the winner of the annual Auction Raffle, went to Branch 89 member Joseph Hanchak. Unfortunately, nobody took home the $15,000 offered in the Hole-in-One Contest. However, John Horvath., did win $500 for getting his tee shot closest to the pin on the big prize hole, and Home Office employee Steve Meyers won $200 for getting his tee shot second closest to the pin. A big "Thank You" goes to all those who participated in the weekend's activities. Your presence helped to make it a special event for all of us. We also thank you for your generosity as the tournament and its related activities raised $7,436 for the WPA's Scholarship Foundation. Of that total, $2,800, was contributed by our hole sponsors (see list on next page). The benefit raffle raised $1,671 while the Chinese Auction raised $2,070. The remainder was generated by Friday night's putting and pitching contests, the golfer's challenges at the practice green and a donation of $500 from the Verhovay Home Association in Harrisburg. The success of this year's tournament was made possible through the efforts of many dedicated people. Our thanks go to the National Officers, the Home Office staff, tournament Co- Administrators Charles S. Johns and Elmer W. Toth, our hole spotters, host Branch 336 Harrisburg, Pa., those who contributed the delicious baked goods for Friday's reception and the staff and management of Dauphin Highlands Golf Course and the Harrisburg East Holiday Inn. We hope to see you next year! Congratulations to the winners of the Fraternal Prize Drawing-Marguerite Beke and Aaron Davenport 8 William Pell Lile, September2004
