Maffei 8347 PENNSAUKEN, NJ Armand DiBartolomeo Anthony Pigliacelli Branching Out Continued from Page 3 Assembly, having heard that the legislature was about to pass a resolution of specific material aid to support his efforts to liberate Hungary, said the following: It will be a day of consolation and joy in Hungary, when my bleeding nation reads these resolutions, which I will send here.... They will spread like lightning over the gloomy land, and my nation unbroken in courage, steady in resolution, firm in confidence, will draw still more courage, more resolution, more confidence from them, because it is well known that the legislature of Ohio would never pledge a word of which it were not sure, that the people of Ohio, will be in case of need as good as that word. Kossuth's words were in response to a resolution proposed by the Ohio Senate that said, in part: "Resolved by the General Assembly, that the Governor of Ohio be authorized, and is hereby instructed to deliver to Louis Kossuth, the constitutional governor of Hungary, on loan all public arms and munitions of war belonging to the State, which remains undisturbed, to be returned in good working order, upon the achievement of Hungarian liberty." The resolution was ultimately not supported by the House. But Ohio's offer of support was finally met 140 years later when in the 1990's Ohio became Hungary's partner in the Partnership for Peace program and as Hungary ascended to full NATO membership. From calling for Kossuth's freedom in 1852 to nurturing Hungarian civic and military evolution into a member of the western community of democratic nations, Ohio has played a critical role in the development of the land of my birth. Finally, and most importantly in Louis Kossuth's message to the Ohio General Assembly is the ideal of the source of our power and the strength of our democracy. In that speech on Feb. 6,1852, Kossuth said the following: The spirit of our age is democracy...and for the people, and all about the people, nothing about the people without the people. Some 11 years later, President Abraham Lincoln, in more eloquent words, stated: "Government of the people, by the people, for the people shall not perish from the earth." ITie two great men never met, but they represent similar ideals on democracy and liberty as reflected in these quotations. As this House faces some of the most critical decisions it must make in many years, it is right and proper to remember, and to reflect on those words. As we vote on budgets, on legislation, on resolutions, that will have a significant impact on the lives of the people of Ohio, let us remember the words of Louis Kossuth from 151 years ago: All for the people, all about the people, nothing about the people without the people. Isten aid meg a Magyart-Isten aid meg Amerikát. God Bless the Hungarians-God Bless Amerca. |ffPL| William PeBn Life, April 2003 17
