A JOINHÄRD^SDAY it starts with us Sponsored by America’s Fraternal Benefit Societies In Partnership with The Points of Light Foundation www.joinhandsday.org America celebrates National Volunteer Week THE NATION WILL commemorate the 30th annual National Volunteer Week, April 27-May 3, in recognition and celebration of volunteers at the local, state and national level. The Week's theme, "Celebrate Volunteers — The Spirit of America!" reflects Americans' resolve to maintain the tradition of neighbor helping neighbor. Coordinated by the Points of Light Foundation and the Volunteer Center National Network, and sponsored by AT&T and AMS, the national week of service is designed to increase the number of volunteers throughout the nation by connecting citizens to service projects in their communities. During National Volunteer Week, millions of volunteers of all ages, including thousands of members of dozens of fraternal benefit socieites, will participate in local community service projects. The week will also include ceremonies honoring our nation's men, women and young people for their outstanding contributions to their communities over the past year. "Volunteering isn't simply nice to do; it's necessary for the health of our democracy. America runs on the spirit of volunteering," said Robert K. Goodwin, president and CEO of the Points of Light Foundation. "Without the efforts of millions of men, women and children who give their time to help others in their communities, our country would be a different place." This year, National Volunteer Week marks the completion of a special initiative of the Foundation, called Unity in the Spirit of America (USA). Signed into law by President George W. Bush on Jan. 10,2002, the USA initiative called on citizens to conduct volunteer projects in honor of those whose lives were lost as a result of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. As of February 2003, more than 4,000 projects have been registered as tributes to nearly 500 of the victims of Sept. 11. A number of other national events will take place during National Volunteer Week including the display and distribution of the winning design of a children's nationwide poster contest, sponsored by KUDOS Brand and Kids Care Clubs, a program of the Points of Light Foundation. The theme is "Celebrate Volunteers — the Spirit of America and Give KUDOS to Kids Who care." During National Volunteer Week, AT&T is partnering with the Points of Light Foundation's national network of Volunteer Centers to coordinate service projects in 10 cities as part of the "AT&T CARES: A Work Day in the Park." Between April 11 and May 6, thousands of AT&T employees will beautify parks and schools and participate in other volunteer projects in the communities where they live and work. AMS, a global business and IT consulting firm, is partnering with volunteer centers throughout the United States in "Know-how to Win" youth projects in their local communities.
