A Great Fratemal-Fest Our annual summer-ending event lives up to its name By John S. Toth Kudos to those involved in the 3rd Annual WPA Picnic-A Great Fraternal-Fest, held Sept. 13. That includes everyone who helped plan the picnic, made items used at the picnic, donated items and prizes, or joined us for the day. The weather started out cloudy with a little light drizzle, but then became sunny. There were a few people that said that as long as the WPA keeps planning future picnics, they will keep coming to them. Wasn't it nice to see the kids march through the tent holding the American Flag? (You bet it was!) The food—everyone loved the food—the gulyás, the kolbász, the cabbage and noodles, the lecsó, the stuffed cabbage (töltött káposzta), the langos, the hamburgers, the hot dogs, the pastries and the bacon fry (szalonna sütés). The popcorn stand was a big success, too. The clowns were great. The kids had a lot of fun in the kids comer. People loved the wagon ride. The music by Dorothy & Co. and the George Bátyi ensemble was super. This picnic is one of the good things the WPA offers. Plans are already underway to make next year's picnic even better. What about the Chinese auction: wasn't that great? The auction raised $4,152 for the Scholarship Foundation. Nice going, everyone, and thank you. Thanks also to all who took a chance in the 50/ 50 raffle. Actually, that raffle had three winners: one received 50 percent of the winner's Children scramble to find a seat during a game of musical chairs, one of many activities held espcially for young guests. Many children at the picnic, including this young girl, enjoyed getting their hand or face painted. Picnic guests pack the hall inside the Lakeside Lodge for the drawing of winners in the Chinese auction. 6 William Pen Life, November 2003 Gerry Davenport (left) and Joan Mauerman had a great time clowning around for the children.
