I In Brief 1 WPA Picnic truly a great fratemal-fest ROCKWOOD, PA - The third annual WPA Picnic-A Great Fraternal-Fest truly lived up to its name. More than 1,000 members and friends of the WPA gathered at Penn Scenic View Sept. 13 for an afternoon full of delicious Hungarian food, spirited Hungarian music, dancing, children’s activities and tremendous fellowship. Overcast skies and a few light sprinkles of rain could not dampen the picnic guests’ high spirits-nor lessen their generosity. More than $7,600 was raised for the benefit of the WPA’s Scholarship Foundation, mostly through the sale of tickets for the Chinese auction and a special “50/30/20” raffle. Watch for a full report and plenty of pictures from our picnic in the November William Penn Life. Thanks for your OCC donations PITTSBURGH, PA - We thank all those who contributed to this year’s Operation Christmas Child campaign. Once again, your generosity has overwhelmed us. Your donations will soon be on their way to children who will really appreciate your kindness. Saluting our brave men and women PITTSBURGH, PA - The WPA asks our members and friends to keep in your thoughts and prayers our Armed Forces serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. If you know of a WPA member serving in this mission, please contact National President George S. Charles, Jr., at 1-800-848-7366, Ext. 121. For Starters WPA establishes charitable ‘Foundation’; accepts donations for victims of Isabel PITTSBURGH - Members and friends of the WPA wishing to offer financial assistance to the victims of Hurricane Isabel can make tax-deductible donations through the recently established William Penn Association Foundation. The William Penn Association Foundation, a 501C3 corporation, will serve as the charitable arm of the WPA. "We established the Foundation in response to what happened in the aftermath of 9/11," said National President George S. Charles Jr. "Members wanted to make donations to help the victims of the terrorist attacks, but, at that time, the Association had no entity in place that would allow members and others to make donations through the WPA and be able to have those donations be tax-deductible." Through the William Penn Association Foundation, "we will now be able to accept donations and conduct fund raising campaigns for various causes, while offering our members the advantage of having those donations be tax-deductible," he said. The first cause for which the Foundation will accept donations is to aid victims of Hurricane Isabel. Isabel was responsible for the deaths of at least 35 people. In its wake, Virginia, North Carolina, Maryland and Delaware were declared federal disaster areas. In North Carolina alone, private insurers estimate that damage could exceed $1 billion. Anyone wishing to donate to Isabel relief efforts may do so through the Foundation. Checks should be made payable to "William Penn Association Foundation" and mailed to: Isabel Relief, c/o William Penn Association Foundation, 709 Brighton Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15233. The Foundation will then channel the funds it collects to those agencies where it will do the most good. President Charles stressed that the new William Penn Association Foundation is a separate entity from the WPA's Scholarship Foundation. "The two are not connected in any way, other than that the WPA operates both of them," he said. "The only purposes of the Scholarship Foundation are to raise funds for scholarship grants and to distribute those funds in the form of grants to our members seeking higher education. "The William Penn Association Foundation will raise and distribute funds for other charitable causes,' he said. The National Officers of the WPA will serve as the officers of the Foundation. Likewise, the WPA Board of Directors will serve as the members of the Foundation's Board.
