19th Annual Golf Tournament A winning weekend Repeat champions head long list of winners at annual golf tournament INDIANA, PA -- If it seems as if we're repeating ourselves when discussing the WPA Annual Golf Tournament, don't blame us entirely. Some of the blame lies on a couple of pretty good golfers: Jack Kelly of Branch 352 Coraopolis, Pa., and Betsy Griffith of Branch 98 Bethlehem, Pa. Prior to this year's tournament at the Chestnut Ridge Golf Course in Blairsville, Pa., Jack had won five WPA low gross titles and Betsy had won two low gross crowns. Well, they did it again. On a warm, dry July day tailor-made for golf, Jack shot a 71 and Betsy a 96 to win the tournament.. .again. In case your math skills are rusty, that makes six titles for Jack and three for Betsy. They were among 76 golfers who enjoyed a weekend of golf and fraternal fun during our 19th annual golf tournament. But, most certainly, they were not the only winners. John and Dolores Horvath of Champs, again Our congratulations to Betsy Griffith of Branch 98 Bethlehem, Pa., and Jack Kelly of Branch 352 Coraopolis, Pa., who shot the best rounds at this year’s golf tournament Betsy shot a 96 to win her third WPA low gross title, while Jack won his sixth WPA low gross title with a round of 71. For a complete list of winners, see “The Leader Board” on the next page. Branch 129 Columbus, Ohio, repeated as low gross champions in the age 60 and over category. Carrie Ryan of Branch 1 Bridgeport, Conn., also took home several awards, including the women's low net title along with prizes for hitting the longest drive and for getting closest to the pin on hole #12. (For a complete list of winners, see box on next page.) A number of non-golfers also went home winners, courtesy of the benefit raffle held during Saturday's golf awards dinner and the Chinese auction held during Friday's reception. Returning as part of the weekend festivities was a special "Fraternal Prize Drawing" during which two members in attendance were each awarded a $2,000 paid-up WPA life insurance policy. The lucky prize winners were Joseph D. Chobody of Branch 88 Rural Valley, Pa., and Joseph B. Volter of Branch 14 Cleveland, Ohio. The weekend's biggest prize—a new set of Taylor made golf clubs and bag—given to the winner of the annual Auction Raffle, went to Bill Ward of Branch 129 Columbus. Unfortunately, nobody took home the $15,000 offered in the Hole-in-One Contest. However, Dan Deabner of Branch 89 Homestead, Pa., did win $500 for getting his tee shot closest to the pin on the big prize hole. A big "Thank You" goes to all those who participated in the weekend's activities. Your presence helped to make it a special event for all of us. We also thank you for your generosity as the tournament and its related activities raised $6,892 for the WPA's Scholarship Foundation. Nearly half of that total, $3,050, was contributed by our hole sponsors (see list on next page). The benefit raffle raised $1,689 while the Chinese Auction raised $1,456. The remainder was generated by Friday night's Golf Tournament Co-Administrators Stephen J. Varga (left) and Michael R.
