The Hajduszoboszlo Medicinal Spa On Oct. 25,1925, a miracle took place in the small town of Hajduszoboszlo. While searching for hydrocarbons, a 73-degree Celsius thermal spring, with a healing power that was proved shortly afterwards, was found 1091 meters below the surface. It is Pavai Vajna Ferenc, a distinguished geologist, the "father" of this thermal water, who is to be thanked for finding this wonder of nature that has been serving mankind for more than 70 years. The brownish, velvet-like, hot treasure of the Earth's depths had flooded nearby surface dents and ditches, and local people soon began to bathe and wash their clothes in it. They soon realized that the water performed miracles. Wounds eased faster and rheumatic ills eased. The sensational news raised experts' interest. They analyzed the "hot gold" and got unprecedented results. Dr. Janos Bodnar, director of the Institute of Medical‘Chemistry studies at the Medical University of Debrecen, wrote about the thermal water found in Hajduszoboszlo: "According to our analysis this water, containing iodine, bromine and salt is unique of its kind. Considering the findings of the chemical analysis and the very high temperature of the water, we can state.. .this water is unique." Dr. Zoltán Dalmady, a balneologist who studies the therapeutic use of medicinal springs, the water at Hajduszoboszlo "is quite similar to the composition of human tissue fluids.... Considering its salt content, it can be regarded as diluted sea water, but it still differs from sea water because it has a low.. .calcium content and at the same time has a significant amount of hydrocarbons in it. Nevertheless, it is still very good for medical cures and for recreational purposes." Based on the analysis of the scientists the town decided to build a spa. One and a half years later, on For those of you who don’t read Hungarian, we present an Englishlanguage version of this month’s “Magyar Nyelv” feature. While not a word-for-word translation, it will give you a general understanding and appreciation of the subject discussed. July 26,1927, the so-called "sandspa" opened to the public. During the past 75 years, the spa has welcomed an ever-increasing number of tourists. The spa has been enlarged and modernized several times to meet greater demands. Thanks to the town, which has always supported the spa, the medicinal spa was able to develop and meet the expectations of generation after generation of visitors. Hajduszoboszlo is a small, beautiful town in the Great Plains. It is 200 kilometers from Budapest and 21 kilometers from Debrecen along Highway No. 4. It is considered the sunniest place in Hungary. The people there take pride in the town's history. The majority of them earn a living on the tourist trade. Parks full of flowers create a nice atmosphere in the gradually developing town. St. Stephen's Park outside of the spa was reconstructed during the last year of the previous millennium. Its newest attraction is the Bell Hous, a donation from Hajduszoboszlo natives Edit Oborzil and her husband Tibor Janey. It houses numerous bells produced by a special technique. Nearby, a beautiful fountain representing the town of water can be seen. The street attracting the most tourists is Mátyás Király (King Matthias) alley. Along this street are a number of hotels, mansions and restaurants. In the summer, street festivals, folk art and many concerts entertain the guests. It is a paradise for the hundreds of thousands of holiday-makers who visit "the Mecca of rheumatics." Year after year, many return to be reborn in the spa complex, which lies on a 30 hectare field. The thermal indoor spa was completely rebuilt inl999. It was transformed into a modern, two-story buidling with a new entrance. It contains consulting rooms, gyms, treatment rooms, four new pools, two dry saunas and a steam room. Upstairs you can find massage rooms, a spacious resting hall and more treatment rooms. It features underwater jet massage treatments and two new rooms for underwater physiotherapy. In the "big hall" you can enjoy the basic spa cure in three indoor pools, each offering different water temperatures (32,36 and 38 degrees Celsius). The waters have been credited with curing rheumatic ills, chronic locomotive disorders, degenerative illnesses, and various aches and pains. The spa has achieved good results for patients recovering from cerebral hemorrhages or paralyses following the Heine- Medin illness, and for those with chronic neuralgia, stenoses and leg ulcers. Several infertile woman have claimed they could become pregnant after several cures at the spa. This is attributed to estrogen found in the water. The waters are also recommended for those experiencing high blood pressure, thyroid problems and skin diseases such as eczema and psoriasis] The spa offers more than 40 kinds of treatments. The newest of which is a soft laser treatment. It is important to note that the treatment is contraindicated in a few cases. You must not use the spa if you suffer from acute inflammatory disease, cancer, malignant tumors, circulatory failure, acute blood pressure rise, tuberculosis, serious illnesses of the central nervous system or infectious skin diseases.
