But, Matthias already had a three-year-old son, Janos Corvinus, born to an Austrian commoner. As his second marriage was also childless, Matthias acknowledged his illegitimate son and began to prepare him to assume the throne. Matthias was frequently ill, beginning in 1840, so he persued the succession issue as much as possible. He knew it would not be easy to have his barons accept Janos, even after adorning him with fancy titles and ranks. Young Janos became the largest landowner in Hungary and aristocrats, counties, royal officials and town officials all swore oaths to him. Still, Matthias doubted whether his son would be accepted as the legitimate heir. He devised a plan to place a Habsburg on the Hungarian throne. In exchange, Janos would receive the Bosnian- Croatian royal title. But, this modest plan never came to pass. Before entering negotiations, Matthias died unexpectedly in Vienna in the spring of 1490. He was about 50 years of age. His death left his followers and Hungarians up to the present day wondering what his next great plan for his nation would have been. 0071 DUQUESNE, PA Irene Szepesi Nicholas A. Demarco James S.
