REV. PAUL BOL VARY PITTSBURGH -- The members of Branch 34 Pittsburgh were saddened by the recent death of the Rev. Paul (László) Bolvary, former branch member, former pastor of St. Ann's Hungarian Catholic Church in Hazelwood, and longtime friend of the WPA and Branch 34. Father Bolvary, 76, died Feb. 7, 2001, in Pecs, Hungary. He was born in Kalocsa, Hungary. He was ordained into the priesthood in 1947 but was soon arrested and imprisoned for three years by the communist government. He was imprisoned shortly after his release for teaching religion and was not permitted to celebrate Mass publicly for 22 years. In 1971, he escaped from Hungary to Rome. He came to America, first settling in Doylestown, Pa., where his order, The Order of St. Paul the Hermit, was centered. He joined the Diocese of Pittsburgh in 1983 and was assigned to St. Ann's where he became active in the affairs of the WPA and the local Hungarian community. He and St. Ann's Church played hosts to visits from both Cardinal Mindszenty and Cardinal Paskai. He is survived by a sister, Etelka of Hungary, and a brother, Joseph of Manassas, Va. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated in Pecs Feb. 15. May he rest in peace. BENJAMIN L. BERO Fairfield, er-The members of Branch 1 Bridgeport, Conn., and the WPA's Official Family were saddened by the death of Benjamin L. Bero, son of National Director William J. Bero and his wife Joanne. Mr. Bero, 20, died Feb. 8, 2001, after the car in which he was a passenger crashed along a highway near Bridgeport. He was bom Nov. 9,1980, in Fairfield. He graduated from Fairfield High School in 1998 and was employed as a waiter. He was a member of the Fairfield Police Explorers and the Black Rock Congregational Church Rangers. In addition to his parents, he is survived by two brothers, Byron and William; and two sisters, Carrie Ryan and Jill. Funeral services were held Feb. 12 at the United Church of Christ in Bridgeport. Burial was in Lawncroft Cemetery, Fairfield. The family asks that donations be made to the Fairfield High School Scholarship Fund, 755 Melville Ave., Fairfield, CT 06432, or the United Church of Christ, 2200 North Ave., Bridgeport, CT 06604.
