For Starters Fraternal spirit spread through Holiday Baskets PITTSBURGH - Once again, WPA branches are spreading the fraternal spirit by participating in our Association’s annual Holiday Basket program. Members donate non-perishable foods and other items, while the WPA supplies a turkey or ham to complete each basket. The baskets are delivered to families in the branch’s community. Many branches started early and delivered baskets over the Thanksgiving holiday, while others will participate during Christmas. Last year, 40 branches provided Holiday Baskets to 120 families. Figures for our 2001 program will be announced early in 2002. We remind all branches to submit their Holiday Basket participation report to the Home Office as soon as possible. Br. 14 Cleveland, OH WESTLAKE, OH ~ It's said that everyone loves a winner. If that's true, then all of us should be absolutely crazy about Ryan Franzinger. A senior at St. Ignatius High School in Cleveland, Ryan had not one but two championship seasons this year. In June he completed the track and field season by winning the discus event at the Division I State Championship meet. His winning toss of 181 feet was eight feet longer than anyone else's best throw. He also placed ninth in the shot put. His efforts helped St. Ignatius win the state team title. Then on Dec. 1, he led the St. Ignatius football team to the state championship. In a 37-6 win over Cincinnati St. Xavier, Ryan, who plays fullback on offense and linebacker on defense, recorded a 9-yard touchdown run, two sacks and another tackle for minus yards. A week earlier during the state semifinals against Massillon, Ryan had 10 carries for 68 yards and three touchdowns. He also had 10 tackles and an interception. What makes Ryan's accomplishments even more noteworthy is that he collected these championships after recovering from tom ligaments in his right thumb, an injury he suffered last fall. But, through patience, hard work and determination, Ryan not only recovered but met the high goals he had set for himself. Ryan has been a WPA member since he was five years old. His mother Clare, sister Kellie and Brother Tim are all WPA members. 2 William Penn Lile, December 2001
