Branch 226 McKeesport, PA By Alexander J. Goydan Branch 226's election of officers for the year 2001 was held on Dec. 10 at the American Legion Post 901 banquet room, prior to the start of our Christmas party for the branch's children and their families. Unanimously elected to serve our branch were: Michael Benedict, president; Bette Hoffman, vice president; Violet Lenart, treasurer; Alexander Goydan, secretary; Joseph Szarka, auditor; and Goldie Szarka, auditor. Decorated and brightly lit for the holidays, the hall was filled with happy children and adults for the party. Country Bumpkin the clown entertained our guests with magic tricks and made balloon figures for the children. Santa Claus arrived and gave each child his personal attention as each sat on his knee. He gave each child the ever-popular WPA goodie bag which included a candy cane filled with M&Ms and a WPA yo-yo. Vice President Hoffman surprised all by presenting each child with a year 2000 uncirculated gold dollar. Stans Catering provided a buffet dinner which included a meat and cheese tray, relish tray, potato salad, Italian pasta, barbeque chicken, coffee, tea, pop and cake. Many attendees complimented the officers for the fine Christmas party they presented. Branch 296 Springdale, PA By Diane M. Torma Branch 296 held its monthly meeting and election of officers on Dec. 14. The following members were reelected to serve our branch for the year 2001: Ralph Schuller, president; John Rusak, vice president; Diane M. Torma, secretary-treasurer; Margaret Kosheba, auditor; Martha Schuller, auditor; and Jennie Wislie, auditor. On Dec. 16, the branch Christmas party was held at the Hungarian Reformed Church in Springdale. Mrs. Torma welcomed everyone and extended holiday greetings on behalf of the Official Family and Home Office staff. Despite a dreary, rainy day and the fact that the Steelers were playing their last game at Three Rivers Stadium, we had a nice turnout. We started off with a door prize drawing in which every child was a winner. The children (and adults) were then enthralled with the magic and comedy of sleight-of-hand artist Michael "Doc" Dougherty, who returned this year as the party's entertainment. The children's hearty laughter lit up the room. Many volunteered to participate in the show and did a terrific job. The audience was led in Christmas song, which prompted Santa Claus to come for a visit. The children took the opportunity to sit on Santa's lap to tell him their wish lists. Scooters seemed to be the hot item this year, although I heard one little girl ask for a Mercedes Benz. Goodie bags were then distributed by President Schuller. The afternoon was topped off with a delicious buffet, complete with Christmas cookies. Many thanks to the Home Office and Board of Directors for the financial assistance and promotional items. The yo-yos were especially well received. Also, many thanks to the branch officers and members who gave of their time and effort to make this year's party successful. A special thank you and birthday wish to Martha Schuller, who prepared her usual abundance of delicious food. As always, you outdid yourself. Get well wishes are extended to Helen Gosciejew who remains hospitalized and hopes to be home soon. We missed you at the party. Welcome back to Sue Molnár. It is nice to have you back with us. Branch 296 holds its monthly meetings on the second Thursday of each month at the Hungarian Reformed Church in Springdale at 7:30 p.m. The next scheduled meeting is on March 8, weather permitting. Happy New Year to all! Branch 590 Cape Coral, FL By Joan Mauerman Our election meeting was held Dec. 8 in Egret Hall. John Lesko, election chairman, swore in the new officers: Mike Tomcsak, president; Rose Darab, vice president; Joan Mauerman, secretary-treasurer; Irene Slauterbeck, auditor; and Jodi Dues, auditor. Afterwards, a brief meeting was held, followed by a delicious luncheon and bingo. Door prize winners were Bob Menner, Eleanor Di Guilio and Norris McGrath. Mr. Lesko and Mr. Tomcsak won the half-and-half raffle. They both donated their winnings to the club. Thanks, guys. Thanks to our bakers, Irene Franko, Julia McGrath and Mrs. Di Guilio. Our main table was decorated with a Hungarian Santa and Mrs. Claus. The embroidery on the dolls was done by Margo Beke. They are absolutely beautiful. Margo is a very talented lady and a devoted member of the Hungarian Reformed Church in Trenton, N.J. She is also a very good cook and baker. Happy birthday to Irene Redden, Joe Mekler Sr. and Mrs. Slauterbeck. Get well wishes to Andy McNelis and Lou Fodor. Our heartfelt condolences to the family of Charles Boso and David George. Margie, we will remember you and your family in our prayers. We received thank you cards from the recipients of our three Holiday Baskets. I would like to thank the Home Office for making this charitable program possible. We also thank them for supporting our Christmas party and the goodie bags handed out.
