18th Annual Golf Fun in the sun WPA returns to Harrisburg for another outstanding golf tournament HARRISBURG, PA ~ When the WPA held its Annual Golf Tournament in Harrisburg three years ago, many who attended said they would love to see the tournament return here. The tournament did indeed return this July, and so did many of our golfers and friends. And, as was the case in 1998, the facilities and weather were excellent and the fraternal spirit of those gathered was warm and inviting. The good times started Friday evening at the golfers reception held in the ballroom of the Harrisburg East Holiday Inn. After enjoying a buffet meal, many guests stayed in the air-conditioned comfort of the ballroom to participate in the annual putting contest. Others ventured outside where the air was warm and humid to compete in the pitching contest. Robert Kramer of Pittsburgh pocketed $100 for getting his shot closest to the pin during the pitching contest. Unfortunately, no one sank three putts in three tries to win the big money at the putting contest. Ten lucky members did have a chance to win $1,000 during the special "putting challenge." But, none of them could sink the required 35-foot putt. Friday evening's other lucky winner was Endre Csornán, the WPA's membership activities coordinator. He won $322 in that night's 50/50 drawing. Proceeds from the raffle, along with the $455 raised by the putting and pitching contests, benefitted the WPA's scholarship foundation. The next morning golfers were greeted by a clear, sunny sky at the Dauphin Highlands Golf Course. Although the skies and termperature were pleasant all day, gusting winds provided an extra challenge to the 91 golfers. Still, everyone seemed to enjoy playing this beautiful golf course, especially Robert Hippensteel Jr. and Betsy Griffith. Betsy won the women's low gross title by shooting a round of 101. Meanwhile, Robert not only won the men's title with a 74, but also won $500 for getting his tee shot closest to the pin at Hole #15. A hole-in-one at that hole would have won him, or another lucky WPA life benefit member, $15,000. But, since no one sunk an ace there, Robert happily settled for the consolation prize. Eighteen other golfers won $10 each by landing their tee shots on the green at the par-3 Hole #4. This "golfer's challenge" along with the putting challenge at the practice green, raised $276 for the scholarship foundation. After a wonderful day of golf, everyone gathered again in the hotel ballroom for the awards dinner. Once again, a good time was had by all. Spirits were high, the WPA Champs Our congratulations to Robert Hippensteel Jr. of Branch 336 Harrisburg and Betsy Griffith of Branch 98 Bethlehem, Pa., who shot the best rounds at this year’s golf tournament Robert scored a 74 while Betsy shot 101.For a complete list of winners, see “The Leader Board” on Page 9. remarks were brief and the food was good. Before the meal was served, National Vice President-Secretary Richard W. Toth, the evening's master of ceremonies, introduced both National President George S. "Pete" Charles, Jr., and WPA Chairman of the Board Anthony C. Beke, each of whom extended warm greetings to the golfers and guests. After dinner, National Vice President-Treasurer Diane M. Torma thanked everyone for their generosity toward the scholarship foundation. She noted that the weekend's activities raised $6,142 for the foundation. Of that total, $3,350 was contributed by the tournament's hole sponsors and $1,614 was raised through the benefit raffle held that evening (see Page 13 for a list of raffle prize winners). Another $65 donation was received from National Auditing Golf Tournament Co-Administrator Charles S. Johns (left) announces Nick Toth Jr. of Branch 349 Weirton, W.Va., as the winner of the annual auction raffle. Nick took home a new set ofTitleist golf clubs and bag. 8 Ham 1’pnn Lile, August 2001
