Branch 14 Cleveland, OH by Dawn D. Ward Branch 14 held its first meeting of the year April 11. It was a pleasure to have Endre Csornán, membership activities coordinator from Pittsburgh, attend the meeting. His enthusiasm as a liaison between the Home Office and the branch is a welcome addition. The branch will sponsor a bus trip to Penn Scenic View Sept. 15 for the summer-ending picnic. The bus will depart at 7:30 a.m. The picnic starts at 11:00 a.m. with an ecumenical service, followed by a day of family activities and refreshments. There will be an all-you-can-eat buffet of Hungarian favorites, such as bogrács gulyás, székely káposzta and kolbász, plus hot dogs and other traditional picnic fare. What a great way to wind up a summer! For more information, please call Branch President Caroline Lanzara at (216) 581-8979. The next Branch 14 meeting will be held Wednesday, May 9, at 7:30 p.m. at the First Hungarian Reformed Church, 14530 Alexander Road, Walton Hills. All Branch 14 adult members are welcome to attend to help plan summer activities. Branch 14 would like to extend wishes for a happy Mother's Day to all its members. Hope to see you at the meeting. Branch 18 Lincoln Park, Ml by Barbara A. House Good luck to all participants in the Annual Bowling Tournament. The best part is just being together. The Toledo branch has worked to make sure you will have a good time. I have seen the hotel, bowling lanes, menus and prizes. I promise you will be excited. Can't wait to see you there. Welcome new members Kristy Wolfe, Joey Gall, Wanda Schexnayder and Michael Chapman. A special hello to William and Rose Lorenc; it was great to talk to you. Thank you for the confidence you have placed in the WPA and me. All articles and photographs for the June issue of the William Penn Life are due in our office by May 25,2001. Happy May birthday to Jason Wolfe, Rose Wickers, Elsie Kantor, Emma Poliska, Father Barnabas, Michael Oberg and Alex Marchelletta. May God bless you with many more. Happy 55th anniversary to Mike and Emma Poliska, and happy 54th to Art and Rose Antal. Now, don't picture old people in your mind-these four people have never turned me down for anything I have asked them to do. Congratulations. I love you guys. Thanks to my V. A. hospital group: Carol and Doug Truesdell, Betty and Rey Holguin and Mike and Emma Poliska. You are a super group. Rey Holguin was honored at a surprise birthday party on May 3. He celebrated his 80th. I know you won't believe it, but it's true. We all worked very hard to keep this secret. Perhaps it's staying active, or maybe it's Fraternalism, but Branch 18 members just keep going and going. Hello, Julia Alex. Hang in there. We are here for you. Get well wishes go to Anna Nagy, Gizella Ressler, Helen Fekete and Steve Szalai. We are praying for you. Remember also in your prayers the families of our deceased members: Michael Barzyk, Louise Massey, Irene Nameth, Mary Ecsedi, Julia Biro and Irene Suchik. May they rest in peace. Congratulations, Tom, on your work at St. Francis Xavier. I'm proud of you. We are working very hard on Join Hands Day. This is a national day of volunteering. The WPA is joining many other fraternals on Saturday, June 16, at the Wayne County Family Center at Michigan Avenue and Merriman. We will work from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. fixing up the shelter. This is a shelter for homeless families and battered women. Lunch will be provided. As president of the Michigan Fraternal Congress, I hosted a meeting of many fraternals in Michigan. Each fraternal picked one aspect of this special project-painting, cleaning up, or whatever needed to be done. We at Branch 18 chose to purchase playground equipment, including children's picnic tables and park benches for children and adults. We also chose to purchase and plant flowers around the building. We now need volunteers to put the equipment together and help plant the flowers. Please call me if you would like to help. This project is being covered by the local media. I'm sure we all have a lot to be thankful for. Isn't it time to return a kindness? Hi, Mary from Branch 15. Nice article. Keep up the good work. See you in Toledo. We are planning a Soaring Eagle trip, leaving on Sunday, Oct. 28, and returning Monday, Oct. 29. Cost is $25 for Branch 18 members and $125 for non-members. Reservations are due June 15. We are limited to 40 people, so please let us know as soon as possible. Holy Cross Hungarian Catholic Church will host a festival at the Yack on June 9 and 10. The Hungarian American Cultural Center Gypsy Festival will be held Aug. 12. Please support these functions so they can continue. Also, remember we will host a dinner celebrating the WPA's 115th anniversary on Oct. 14. Tickets are $10 for members and $15 for nonmembers. Dinner will be served at 1:00 p.m., followed by a short program. George Bátyi and his ensemble will perform for your listening and dancing pleasure from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. Please call me for tickets. I know you will have a wonderful time. Our next two meetings will be held on Friday, May 18, and Friday, June 8. Plan on joining us at 7:00 p.m. at the Continued on Page 18 William bnii Life, May 2001 17
